Kaytlyn Korn, MSN, RN, System stroke coordinator, is discussing why it’s important to call 911 when showing signs of a stroke. "TIME IS BRAIN! Did you know that 2 million brain cells die every minute after a stroke, increasing the risk of permanent brain damage, disability, or death,” she said. If you suspect you or a loved one are experiencing a stroke, call 911 to receive emergency care as soon as possible. Prior to transport to the nearest emergency department, a stroke alert is initiated so that the hospital’s stroke team is ready to rapidly assess, perform diagnostics, and administer treatment. Odds are, at some point, someone we care about could experience a brain injury. Knowing where to go BEFORE something happens can set you and your loved ones up for better care and better outcomes. One important step we can take is to check to see which local hospitals have stroke specific designations, such as a Primary Stroke Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center or Acute Stroke-Ready Hospital. In the case of a stroke, fast care is best. IF we have the ability to choose, these designations can help us to choose wisely.

Every year, an estimated 2.8 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury, and more than 5 million people are living with a permanent brain injury-related disability – that’s one in 60 Americans. Yet, the long-term impacts of brain injury are not well known outside of the community. In our new position paper, “Brain Injury: A Lifelong Journey,” BIAA is calling for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to designate brain injury as a chronic condition, and that brain injury should be recognized, treated, and covered as such. This position paper gathers the perspectives of survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals about what designating brain injury as a chronic condition would mean.
