Terrorists Taunt Nigeria with N40 Trillion Ransom Demand Violent criminals are leaving no one in doubt that they and not any government, are in control in Nigeria. Otherwise, kidnappers would not demand an unassailable N40 trillion, eleven Toyota pick-up vans and 150 motorbikes as ransom to release sixteen hostages. The sheer magnitude of that ransom demand is a ruse. In fact, the hostages' fate might already be sealed considering that they hail from the same locality as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). This might explain why Kaduna State is of late at the receiving end of kidnappings which before now saw the abduction of almost 300 school pupils. The worrisome trend is nothing but a taunt of "what can your CDS and his army do?" There could be no other way to explain the rising spat of kidnappings. On the whole, the message is clear - violent criminals can strike at places and times of their choice. And a known relationship with security agents is now a grave risk and not an advantage in Nigeria. Thus, all residents should prepare for the long haul in a country that disdains intelligence led policing or being  proactive about secuirity. Otherwise, like in other climes, intelligence would long ago have been used to unmask fifth columnists sabotaging efforts of the security agencies. Also, intelligence would have been used to decapitate terrorist hierarchies for their groups to die natural death. But surprisingly, only rank and file members of terrorist groups are targeted in Nigeria's counter-terrorism war leaving the masterminds to keep recruiting and operating. Hence the rising spat of kidnappings just when the security agencies are doing victory laps over terrorists purportedly bombed to smithereens by the airforce or "neutralized" by soldiers and the police. You would think Nigerian government officials are serious when they assure that they are on top of the security situation. Yet, in a village or town without a police post, school pupils were abandoned to a cruel fate. Neither had their parents been sensitized on the need for vigilance to recognize and alert on advance of terrorists calling to kidnap their offsprings in broad daylight. In fact, Nigerian government officials are a wonderful bunch. When you respond to their calls for input, you either get no acknowledgement or your emails bounce back from supposed official email addresses whereas other countries and international bodies by strenuous word search, proactively establish contact with experts across the world.  With the precarious security situation of Nigeria, self-defence measures cannot be the last layer but the very first layer of the country's national security architecture. And collectively, that would pave way for the country to exit the state of nature where life is short and brutish.

Europe and security challenges I really don't understand from so many security services, analysts, and security professionals why security risks are not determined at the European level and the bearers of security threats are not clearly identified. It is about organized crime, terrorism, countries that threaten European security in any way, etc. Europe is currently an oasis of terrorism if we take into account, for example, the number of active cells of ISIL and other jihadist organizations in, say, France. And not only in France but also in Germany, Austria, and other countries. Recently, a terrorist attack was committed in Serbia by a convert in the name of ISIL-Daesh, and on that occasion, a Serbian gendarmerie was slightly injured and the attacker was killed. This attack revealed that ISIL-Daesh is operating on the territory of Serbia. If it is possible to make a security assessment and based on it to identify five major indicators of the terrorist threat, why is it not done at the level of the whole of Europe? The question is completely justified and the lack of action only opens up painful questions that touch the field of politics, not security. https://lnkd.in/dfgpwwN2

Prioritization of all hazards to communities are important for threat vulnerability assessments

In Nigeria, it's crucial to take the security situation seriously. The government appears to be losing control while violent criminals gain more power. It's time for a new approach: focusing on intelligence-driven operations and proactive security measures. This entails strengthening cooperation between security agencies, enhancing intelligence gathering capabilities, and investing in community awareness and self-defense training. Additionally, the government must promote transparency and accountability through open communication with the populace and actively involving experts in finding solutions to these critical challenges.

As we remain vigilant in the face of school shootings, it's crucial to remember that terrorist organizations continue to plot large-scale attacks within America. While the current focus may be on tragic school shootings, it's important to broaden our awareness. A recent case, which has not received widespread coverage, involved a Pakistani citizen plotting an attack in New York City, aiming "to slaughter, in the name of ISIS, as many Jewish people as possible," according to the U.S. Attorney’s press release. The terrorist conducted planning and engaged in the attempted recruiting of others to join in the attack. During one exchange the terrorist noted “if we succeed with our plan this would be the largest attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.” Fortunately, he was apprehended by police not far from the U.S.-Canadian border. While school shootings deserve our attention, we must also prepare for larger threats, such as Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attacks (CCTA). The CCTA at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, which claimed over 100 lives, serves as a tragic reminder of how devastating such coordinated attacks can be. The 9/11 Commission warned against another "failure of imagination." Let’s heed that warning and think bigger, preparing for potential large-scale attacks alongside the critical issue of school safety. The FSB stated that a citizen from a Central Asian country, born in 2002, was planning to carry out the attack while citizens were gathered at the synagogue. The individual had conducted reconnaissance at the synagogue and had already purchased materials for a bomb. However, during his arrest on April 10, the suspect resisted arrest and was neutralized by return fire. This comes just weeks after a tragic incident in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Oblast, where gunmen opened fire at the Crocus City Hall, resulting in 144 deaths and over 550 injuries. As a result of this recent arrest, Russia has charged four suspects believed to be directly involved in the attack.
