With financial pressure on Universities in the U.K. at an all time high and for the first time ever, open discussions around the dreaded ‘what if’ one of them went under, now is the time to start thinking about how you can solidify and improve the cash flow from the students you have. A really interesting article shared by the British Universities Finance Directors Group really brings this home - https://lnkd.in/er6Sd4SQ We know that due to changes in U.K. legislation, applications for international postgraduates are down 44%. We also know that over 70% of students rate flexibility of payment options as extremely important in making their choice of University. Relying on how credit control and applications have been managed in the past just isn’t going to cut it as we enter a period of evolution in the higher education sector. Through our partners Convera, IODM is helping universities across the U.K. both revolutionise and strengthen the way they help students with the payment journey and in turn significantly improve their cash flow and efficiencies within the finance teams. Don’t just take our word for it - you can speak to some of the huge institutions who are already using the IODM platform to communicate effectively with students through automation whilst offering flexible and bespoke payment plan offerings. And the best part? It’s completely free for any university using Convera as one of their student payment providers. In the UK, the higher education sector is already experiencing dampened demand from international students, linked in part to policy changes (actual and anticipated). In a double whammy, the UK - and the US - may also lose out due to the strength of the pound sterling and the US dollar. This will make studying in the UK and US less affordable for some, with alternative destinations becoming increasingly attractive. This ICEF Monitor article highlights the countries whose students may be particularly acutely affected and shares commentary from experts including Jazreel Goh and Haike Manning. 💡 Valuable intel for all those planning their international recruitment strategies and tactics, and considering their enrolment projections. https://lnkd.in/ehpqSHsD

JASON CLARE TO UNIS: SHUT UP, ACCEPT BAD POLICY OR I'LL GIVE YOU WORSE " Education Minister Jason Clare has written to university chiefs warning them to tone down their public criticism of Labor’s plan for caps on overseas students, telling them that if it fails in parliament they will be even worse off under the current system.... In December, then-immigration minister Clare O'Neil introduced a rule that specifies tier 1 institutions – the ones that enrol genuine students who were the most likely to graduate – should have their visas processed more quickly. Known as ministerial direction 107, the rule had the effect of causing long delays and a massive rise in visa refusals at most universities and colleges – and is the most unpopular of a raft of recent Labor measures to slow the rate of foreign students.... In his letter, Mr Clare said that if the government’s proposed legislation to impose the quotas failed to get through parliament, the system would stay the way it is. “Should the bill not pass, I can confirm that ministerial direction 107 will remain in place to allow the government to achieve its goal of reducing the level of migration,” he wrote.... Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi said caps were “irrational and reckless”, and the government was “trying to bully [universities] into agreeing to exchange one bad policy for another”... “If the government had any sense, it would scrap MD 107, scrap the caps, and start over. Instead, Minister Clare is trying to strong-arm the sector into submission,” she said. “If there was any remaining doubt that international student caps have everything to do with migration and nothing to do with international education, the minister’s letter puts this to bed.” Read more (and you should) - https://lnkd.in/g2Mv2s-Z Perhaps rather than bluster, threats and a binary choice between 'awful' and 'worse', our failing Education Minister may consider actively engaging with the sector in finding a way through this crisis of his own making? Failed immigration policy has already derailed the career of Clare O'Neil and Andrew Giles in this term. Is it about to claim a third ministerial victim? Time to step up, Jason Clare MP, and undo the damage that you've done.
Clare tells VCs: shut up on caps or suffer the consequences

Financial Meltdown, that’s a catchy couple of words to start with. It would be interesting to examine what academically defines a financial meltdown. Meltdown brings up visions of nuclear power stations and Chernobyl, so in financial terms is that catastrophic, no return, end game, gone. Or is it, a cry for help from institutions for more cash from the treasury or like the Water industry a push to increase water bills. Like any industry and education is an industry it has its ups and downs, those who innovate, those who fall, those that rise. Us in the tourism sector in Wales don’t have a fairy godmother or father to moan to when things go downwards to bail us out. We sink or swim maybe that is what is needed in the educational industry.

Are UK business schools facing a financial meltdown? The Chartered Association of Business Schools found that 90 per cent of surveyed institutions reported a decline in non-European Union applications year-on-year for courses starting this autumn, with 70 per cent reporting “significant” declines. That is unprecedented and given that many universities have regarded their business schools as “cash cows” to fund other parts of the institution, this could lead to major issues across the sector especially those that have bet the house on Nigerian postgraduate students.
