In 2023, we completed the second Aldabra Clean-Up Project, supported by the Ocean Conservancy, where we removed another 23.5 tonnes of marine debris from Aldabra's pristine beaches. Although clean-up efforts are vital for preserving the shores of Aldabra for the various species that depend on them, the issue of plastic pollution extends far beyond. Plastic consumption is a global problem that affects every corner of our planet, from the most remote islands like #Aldabra to the deep sea. Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner oceans, streets, and beautiful communities. Will you be part of Plastic Free July by choosing to refuse single-use plastics? ♻️ Together, hundreds of millions of people are choosing to refuse single-use plastics by switching to durable reusable items, avoiding packaging and reducing waste, stopping around 300 million kg of plastic polluting the world each year. Marine debris - rubbish, usually plastics which make their way into the oceans - is a major threat to the health of the #GreatBarrierReef and can easily kill marine life, such as turtles, dugongs, dolphins and seabirds. Collective action by community, industry and government to choose sustainable options, minimise waste and undertake stewardship activities is required to reduce the impacts of marine debris on the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. To see how you can take small steps, for big differences, check out Plastic Free July 😎 #PlasticFreeJuly #LovetheReef

Today Defra announced that from June 2025 it will be illegal to sell single-use vapes in England – a ban that we at The Rivers Trust welcome after calling for it last year. Alongside concerns for their impacts on human health, disposable vapes pose several threats to life in our rivers. They are an increasingly prevalent source of plastic pollution in our waterways as they are on land, and the electronic components of these devices release chemicals and heavy metals as they degrade, having not been designed with long-term use in mind. "It is positive to see Government slowly chipping away at the issue of single-use plastics and for the clock to now be ticking down for disposable vapes, but there is still much to do to reduce sources of plastic reaching the environment. The Rivers Trust will continue to call on Government to drive reductions in plastic production, incentivise the development and use of alternative sustainable materials, and to push for and sign up to an ambitious Global Plastics Treaty." — Tessa Wardley, Director of Communications and Advocacy at The Rivers Trust. The single-use vapes in the image below were all removed from the river Lambourn during a litter pick with Action for the River Kennet last month. 💭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐚𝐠 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝? 𝐀 𝐃𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞-𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 🌍 Sweden recently made waves by abolishing its tax on plastic bags, sparking heated debates about the future of environmental policies. Proponents argue that the tax placed undue financial pressure on consumers, while critics warn that this decision could lead to a surge in plastic bag usage, potentially worsening global plastic pollution. Plastic bags are a well-known environmental hazard, clogging waterways, harming wildlife, and contributing to the mounting waste crisis. Many countries have implemented similar taxes or outright bans, viewing them as essential measures to combat plastic pollution. So, does removing this tax undo years of progress, or is it a practical move to address other concerns? 👉 What do you think? Could abolishing plastic bag taxes make it worse with plastic pollution? Or does this decision have merit in balancing environmental and societal needs? Plastic production and use is predicted to triple by 2060! But each year over 445,000 tonnes of plastic pellets already spill directly into the environment throughout the global plastic supply chain, causing wide ranging impacts to human and wildlife health, as well as socioeconomic consequences! To prevent pellet pollution Fidra rightly believes we need a full supply chain approach, encompassing all actors and sites which handle pellets throughout the global plastic supply chain. This #PlasticFreeJuly let's raise awareness of the need to reduce the demand for plastics, and thus reducing the volumes of pellets produced and transported through the international supply chain, limiting the opportunity for pellets to spill into the environment. As the fourth session of the #PlasticsTreaty draws to a close, there is still a clear difference in the views of different countries on the purpose and scope of this agreement, in order to address plastic pollution. At No More Butts, our advocacy is to ban plastic cigarette filters (and vaping waste). Butt, that doesn't stop us from supporting action on the overall reduction of plastic production. To help progress the alignment of views before the final session later this year, a "Bridge to Busan" has been released by Environmental Investigation Agency, with an accompanying website and press release. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/ghfykkjD In addition to featuring on the list of supporting countries for the Bridge, France is also featured in media this week as G7 countries also announce their plan to commit to reducing the overall production of primary polymers. 🌊 On World Ocean Day, we reflect on the importance of our oceans and the urgent need to protect them. Plastic pollution is a major concern, with production rising rapidly. Single-use plastics make up 40% of all plastic produced each year and can last in the environment for centuries. At Bidvest Noonan, we are removing single-use plastics from our business. A key initiative is reducing our use of premixed, ready-to-use cleaning chemicals. This change will help us eliminate 95% of our plastic chemical containers and remove around 80,000 single-use plastic bottles each year. ♻️ Join us in making a difference. Let's protect our oceans for future generations. 🌍💙 #WorldOceanDay #PlasticPollution #Sustainability #BidvestNoonan
