Empowering northern Tasmanians towards resource recovery and sustainable waste management. Trusted advisors since 2007,

About us

Circular North, established in 2007 is hosted by NRM North, partnering with eight local councils across northern Tasmania. Circular North was known as the Northern Tasmanian Waste Management Group for more than 15 years and rebranded in April 2024. Our mission is guided by the waste hierarchy, advocating for ecologically sustainable development and resource recovery strategies. Formerly funded through a voluntary levy, we now operate under a revised governance structure funded by the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board. Australia's waste management strategies are evolving towards circular economy principles, aligning with Circular North's objectives. We aim to eliminate waste and pollution, promote product design for reuse and recycling, and transition towards regenerative natural systems. Our initiatives focus on empowering local businesses and communities to reduce waste generation and embrace circular practices. Together, we envision a prosperous economy and healthier environment for northern Tasmania, built on sustainable waste management and circular economy principles. Join us in creating a future where resources are valued and regenerated, benefiting both residents and businesses alike. Circular North is supported by the Tasmanian Government, through the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board.

  • ♻️ Reflecting on Circular North's Achievements in 2024 As 2024 draws to a close, we're proud to reflect on a year of transformative action and progress towards a circular economy in northern Tasmania. Guided by our commitment to resource recovery and sustainability, Circular North achieved several milestones that showcase the power of collaboration and innovation: - Household Hazardous Waste Campaigns: We successfully collected over six tonnes of household hazardous waste, ensuring the safe handling and recovery of materials that could otherwise harm the environment. -Supporting Local Initiatives: Through our Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Grants, we continued funding six innovative projects aimed at reducing waste and advancing resource recovery, a program we proudly launched in 2023. - Sustainable Living Festival 2024: As a sponsor of Tamar NRM's 'Going Circular' event, we supported community education activities that empowered residents to embrace better resource separation practices. - Regional Resource Recovery Review: This year, we coordinated a comprehensive review of 24 council-owned or supported waste transfer and resource recovery sites, driving improvements in best practices. - Problematic Waste Coordination: On behalf of councils, we facilitated the collection and transport of challenging waste materials like e-waste, polystyrene, paint, and fluorescent lights—ensuring these materials are diverted from landfill and managed sustainably. - Statewide Collaboration: We strengthened our impact through collaboration with Tasmania’s other regional waste groups, TasWaste South and the Cradle Coast Waste Management Group, as well as with the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board. -Supporting Regional FOGO Initiatives: We purchased over 6,000 kitchen caddies for councils, bolstering existing FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) services and supporting new organic waste initiatives in Dorset and on Flinders Island. Our journey in 2024 highlights the importance of working together towards a circular future. Every step we take—big or small—contributes to a more sustainable, resource-conscious northern Tasmania. We're excited to continue building momentum in 2025♻️
