Conservative enclaves quit California's oldest city alliance: Recent developments have surfaced in California’s local political landscape. A group of Southern California cities with conservative-leaning city councils have chosen to exit the League of California Cities. Citing differences over policy issues, cities like Newport Beach and Yorba Linda are parting from this 126-year-old coalition which aims to unite municipal voices in the state's political arena. The departure signifies a shift in the dynamic of local government unity, reflecting the growing polarization in political climates. While some argue that operating within the organization is more effective for policy influence, others feel the need to seek representation that aligns more closely with local interests. This move points to a changing strategy amongst cities to advocate for their communities in the complex fabric of California politics. Read more:

We have a couple of spots left if you would still like to register! April 18: Citizen Assemblies- Reinvigorating Civic Engagement Note: This is a morning forum, 8:30am. Join us for a discussion that will open up the idea of citizen involvement in local decision-making. Increasingly people on all sides of the political spectrum (including those unengaged) feel left out of how decisions are made. A Citizens’ Assembly is a group of people selected by lottery who are broadly representative of a community. They spend significant time learning and collaborating through facilitated deliberation to find common ground and form collective recommendations for policymakers, decision-makers, and the community. These Assemblies are sometimes called Citizens’ Juries, Panels, or Councils depending on their size and the country where they are taking place. We will discuss how this model works internationally and how it is currently being used right here in Central Oregon. More info: https://lnkd.in/gSYnjqRi

This posting from my alma mater - viz.,The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) - fits nicely with my BBC News piece I posted earlier today, with commentary. That commentary on the “suffragettes movement” equally applies to this one. The overarching theme is that there are certain movements that are just not passing fads. ESG is, and just happens to be (i.e., just like the “suffragettes movement “), one of them, despite the inevitable ebbs-and-flows it is & will undergo.
☕ You might have walked past 20 Kingsway a million times, but did you know it used to house the Tea Cup Inn – a tea shop for #suffragettes? The offices of the Women’s Social and Political Union were at Clement’s Inn and their newspaper printed at the St Clement’s Press on Clare Market. Look closely and traces of the suffragettes can still be found around our campus today. #WomensHistoryMonth #History

Fascinating and provocative day at The Scottish Parliament today with Lianne Williams, celebrating 25 years since it was reconvened, and looking ahead to its next 25. Huge thanks to UofG Centre for Public Policy, Scotland's Futures Forum, UK in a Changing Europe and University of Stirling for supporting it. And also to Brian Taylor for his expert hosting. We kicked off with a reflection piece on the foundation of the Scottish Parliament and its formative years. I wasn't old enough to have a vote in 1997 (sorry, had to throw that in!), so it was fascinating to hear from past Presiding Officers Lord David Steel and Rt Hon Ken Macintosh, as well as current PO Alison Johnstone, alongside a leading figure in the drive for the Parliament Esther Roberton. Very important to reflect upon the motivations behind Holyrood's reconvening, and how that journey has unfurled in the decades since. Nicola McEwen and Anand Menon engaged in a fascinating discussion with Brian about the wider devolution context in the #UK, particularly post-#Brexit. Ranging from discussions of #federalism to the impact of City Mayors and Combined Authorities in #England, it left a lot to ponder ahead of a potential change in the UK Government. A series of quickfire provocations from David Bell, Elizabeth Bomberg, Mark Wong and Kezia Dugdale covered a range of challenges which have arisen across the lifetime of the Parliament - #AI, #ClimateEmergency, the #Economy and #polarisation, to name but a few. The contributions posed a challenge to our way of politics as normal - how do we move beyond simply offering spending to exploring opportunities for saving and delivering better services? We finished up with a panel of politicians, Ben Macpherson, Mark Griffin, Meghan Gallagher, Ross Greer and Hannah Steel, sharing insights into where Holyrood, and Scottish #politics more generally, sit just now. There were positive contributions about focusing on shared goals to make Scotland a better place and being proactive rather than simply reactive with policy making - no doubting it is a difficult place to be in for all our representatives just now in terms of potential for collaboration. Key themes through the day for me were around Parliament needing help with its capacity challenges, it has changed dramatically in responsibilities since 1999; a need to focus less on constant legislation and more on follow up and delivery; and a call for the Parliament to be ambitious about the change it can deliver for Scotland. For me in my work Enable, the need for #accountability felt key - how do we ensure that the rights we have enshrined in law are actually delivered, fully and consistently, for the people we serve? Great day, and great to catch up with Diarmaid Lawlor and Susan Mansfield, and to meet Jan M. Jasiński. #Devolution #ScotParl25

Can the Conservative Party truly reconcile economic growth with a commitment to social value? As leadership contenders Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat, James Cleverly, and Robert Jenrick present their visions at the 2024 The Conservative Party Conference, each leader puts forward distinct approaches to renewal - read their speeches by searching this website: https://lnkd.in/erjBjXMq Badenoch’s “Renewal2030” strategy advocates for tax cuts and deregulation to spur economic activity. Tugendhat emphasises localism and devolution, thus empowering regional decision-making. Cleverly focuses on reforming the party to regain public trust, while Jenrick promotes a smaller state and smarter regulations aimed at boosting national prosperity. As these policies unfold, the challenge remains: how can the Conservative Party ensure that economic recovery efforts also foster social equity and community resilience? What do you think? Should social impact be a core component of the Conservative Party's future policies?
