Despite the strong attendance and good vibes at #electronica2024, it was hard to miss the shadow of today’s #geopolitical challenges. At the SEMI Europe Executive Forum, many speakers emphasized how disruptions have reshaped what was once a global industry. Laith Altimime, who hosted the event, noted “Geopolitical Tensions & Resilience” as one of the #semiconductor industry’s top challenges. IMEC’s President, Luc Van den hove, who often refers to his leading research institute the “Switzerland of semiconductors”,  warned against isolationism, stating: “Self-reliance leads to mediocrity.” Barbara Frenkel from Porsche, highlighted the rising number of global trade restrictions imposed annually worldwide. For many in the audience—primarily European professionals eager to continue business with both East and West—these insights felt painfully like “preaching to the choir.” They’re not the ones setting restrictions. On the contrary, they are already working hard to stay neutral and navigate these complexities in their R&D and supply chain considerations.

Attending #electronica2024, held in Munich this week, feels a bit like “cognitive dissonance.” This 60th edition of the conference is the largest ever, packed with exhibitors and visitors - as if Germany wasn't grappling with a major political turmoil and a sluggish economy. Despite recently reporting flat or negative outlooks, leading European #semiconductor companies had a strong presence: large booths, big teams. Exhibitors included a combination of European leaders, some (few) American firms, and numerous Chinese companies— all seemingly unfazed by the current challenging geopolitical environment. The automotive sector was front and center at nearly every booth, even as European car manufacturers face serious headwinds, and VW just announced it will close “at least” three plants for the first time in its 87-year history. Most people I asked about this seemingly contradiction, have said that this shows that the industry should “Keep Calm and Carry On” inspite of everything else. In fact, in an interview with Nitin Dahad, NXP Semiconductors’ CTO Lars Reger captured this dichotomy well: “We tend to overestimate the next 2 years (downturn) and underestimate the next 10 years (recovery).” His advice? “Look at [the situation] with a little bit of serenity—[the recovery] will come, and we must only do one thing: not to slow down #innovation.” Sounds like a plan!
