BLACK ENGLISHES AS UNEQUAL ENGLISHES Gregory Paul Glasgow (2025): "However, I argue in this book that objective realities - - language ideologies, linguistic discrimination and the dominance of Global North TESOL scholarship and industries with respect to knowledge - sadly remind us of the fact that attitudes about varieties of English remain fixed on a hierarchical scale and need examining more closely. Tupas (2015) proposes the notion of Unequal Englishes, a core concept of this book, as it relates to how language teaching is differentially perceived, practiced and promoted, and how BTEs [Black Teachers of English(es)] are positioned due to these hierarchies." https://lnkd.in/e9kVTErq

‘Dare to Differ: Inclusive and Innovative Languages Education’ was the theme of the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association of Victoria Conference, in Melbourne. Alison von Dietze, our Curriculum Specialist for Languages, spoke at one of the conference’s workshops about how to use the ACARA Language support resources for differentiating content in language programs for both primary and secondary students. She demonstrated how to adapt content for a range of language proficiencies and starting points within a single class. These resources include illustrative examples of language and language use. It is VITAL that we protect the languages students join our classrooms knowing, hearing, understanding, speaking. These are leverages to acquiring English or other languages. Ignoring languages not only limits students’ participation but also endangers their confidence & identity increasing language loss. Linguistic oppression has devastating consequences. 💗 Valentina #literary #multiligualLearners #ReadingWritingELs #languageAcquisition #MLLs #bilingualkids #translanguaging #internationalliteracyday

An interesting paper on implicit/explicit language attitudes to Welsh, with a suggestion that there is a link between higher/early exposure to Welsh (from primary school age) and more favourable implicit attitudes to the language. These more favourable attitudes, it posits, in turn help to ensure that Welsh is modeled positively to speakers' children and transmitted within families to the next generation - a key pillar of success for achieving WG's Cymraeg 2050 ambition.
