As the world focuses on #suicideprevention this week, check out new paper with Anukrati Nigam and Madhurima Vuddemarry from Association for Socially Applicable Research on #economic burden of #suicide in India. We find that in 2019 (the pre-pandemic baseline) the national economic burden of suicide was over US$ 16.8 billions. The top three states, #Karnataka, #Tamil Nadu, and #Maharashtra, contributed to 44.82% of the total burden. The age group 20–34 years had the largest suicide burden - 53.05% of the total. These societal losses are due to #policy inaction. Not investing in suicide prevention is costing #India & its youth billions. Thanks to The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia for taking this up and putting it through a rigorous yet impartial review process. Special thanks to Apoorv Thittayil Suresh, PhD for being a great editor and our anonymous reviewers for their peer review. https://lnkd.in/eEXHHZbX

The covert manifestations of lead poisoning has ensured it remains largely unrecognized as a major public health issue in India. In a recent survey conducted by Pahlé India Foundation in association with USAID and IPE Global in Jharkhand, we found that the majority of doctors and frontline healthcare workers are unaware of lead poisoning and its considerable dangers. 🩺⚠️ To address these critical gaps, Pahlé India Foundation organized the first-ever International Convening in New Delhi, titled "Lead Poisoning in India: Status, Challenges, and Way Forward." 🌍💡 This hybrid event brought together over 60 experts, policymakers, scientists, medical professionals, and representatives from multilateral organizations across the US, Bangladesh, and India to discuss this urgent public health crisis. 🌐👩🔬👨⚕️ Panellists explored a range of topics, including the prevalence and sources of lead exposure, challenges in testing, and the latest research and innovations to mitigate the crisis. 🔬📊 The convening underscored the importance of a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach to address lead poisoning and identify actionable solutions.
