Their commitment to their #mentalhealth journeys, facing challenges head-on, and continuously striving for betterment is nothing short of remarkable. Each step they take towards #healing and self-improvement reinforces the importance of the work we do together. Awareness: More people are recognizing the importance of #mentalhealth, prioritizing #selfcare, and seeking help when needed. This shift is inspiring and necessary for a healthier society. #military #children #blackmen #traumainformed #veterans Education: Through workshops, webinars, and discussions, I have gained valuable insights and tools for managing #mentalhealth, equipping individuals with the knowledge to navigate their #mentalhealth journey. Conversations: I have had the privilege of engaging in meaningful dialogues about #mentalhealth, breaking down #stigmas, and fostering a culture of openness and understanding. Support Systems: I have seen communities unite, offering support and resources to those in need. This sense of solidarity and compassion is truly heartwarming. #churches Growth: Every story of recovery and progress reminds me that healing is possible. The human spirit's capacity to overcome challenges continues to amaze me. As we move forward, let us keep this momentum going. #Mentalhealth matters every day, not just in #May. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. Supporting Our Veterans: A Personal Reflection Today, I want to share a story that’s deeply personal and serves as a reminder of the unseen battles many veterans face long after their service ends. A few days ago, an old friend from my first combat tour reached out me. We hadn't spoken in almost 20 years. He confided in me about his struggles with addiction, mental health, and the challenges of civilian life. His bravery in reaching out reminded me of the bond we share as combat vets and the importance of supporting one another. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned from this experience: 💪 Courage Comes in Many Forms: It took immense courage for my friend to reach out and share his struggles. This reminded me that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. 🧠 The Importance of Mental Health: Our conversation highlighted the critical need for mental health support among veterans. Many struggle in silence, and it’s crucial to provide accessible resources and support. 🤝 Support Networks Matter: Being there for one another can make all the difference. Whether it’s a simple check-in message or helping find professional support, small actions can have a big impact. 📚 Training and Education: Just as we trained in the military to face physical challenges, we must also educate ourselves and others on the importance of mental health and well-being. Continuous learning and awareness can help us support those in need. Let’s remember to reach out to our fellow veterans and offer a hand, a listening ear, or a guiding word. Our collective support can help bridge the gap between the battlefield and a fulfilling civilian life. #VeteranSupport #MentalHealth #LifeLessons #Training #Education #SupportOurTroops #Veterans #VeteransMentalHealth #VeteransHelpingVeterans #ADHD #AddictionRecovery #CombatVeterans #PTSAwareness #SupportEachOther

"Mental health support shouldn't end when military service does." On Thursday evening, I attended a powerful event on preventing suicide in the veteran community, hosted by The Rifles at London's historic Barber Surgeons' Hall in London. My takeaways: + There's a critical gap in mental health support during the civilian transition. When military personnel leave service, they're not just changing jobs – they're rebuilding their entire identity. We need to do more to help at this point. + We underestimate how difficult it is for people to put their hand-up or self-refer. We must educate families to spot the signs too, and deliver proactive support and prevention. + Community matters. The strongest support systems are built on understanding, connection, and early intervention. I'm incredibly proud of Leafyard’s work with The Rifles, and so pleased that since July this year, we hit a turning point together in bridging this crucial gap – and providing mental fitness tools that support veterans and their families through one of life's biggest transitions. So impressed by The Rifles' commitment to proactive support networks. They understand the power of education, training, community and action. Suicide is NOT inevitable. We have to keep asking the question – if someone needed help, would they know where to turn? #MentalHealth #Prevention #VeteranSupport #MentalFitness The Rifles Network Barber-Surgeons' Hall Baz Melia Pete Corbin

#July #Freedom #Independence As summer kicks into overdrive this month, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what independence truly means for my fellow #Veterans and #ServiceMembers. Like so many of us, I have travel and vacation plans top of mind. While many will enjoy barbecues and fireworks with loved ones, let's remember that the freedom we celebrate was hard-won by the brave men and women who served our country. For so many of us, the battle continues long after returning home. Historically, we (Stop Soldier Suicide) receive the greatest number of help requests during the summer months - July and August. While approximately 13 million Americans live with post-traumatic stress disorder in any given year, PTSD has long been particularly insidious for the military community. At SSS, we're fighting for a different kind of freedom for all who served: freedom from the invisible wounds of war, from the struggle with PTSD and depression, and from the risk of suicide. We are committed to reducing Veteran suicide by 40% by 2030. Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to the upcoming Independence Day holiday, but it’s not without apprehension, as fireworks and PTSD are not good bedfellows. As fireworks light up the sky, let's remember the Veterans who may be struggling with those sounds and memories. Have a safe and meaningful Independence Day. #MentalHealth #Veterans #IndependenceDay #PTSD

Another study of ours has been published thanks to the leadership and great brains trust of Sharon Lawn et al! The objective of this study was to describe families’ experiences of supporting Veterans/PSP seeking help for mental health concerns and formulate a conceptual model to illustrate the impacts of these experiences on families. #moralinjury #moraldistress #vicarioustrauma #militaryveteranfamilies #veteranhealth International Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health This study offers a detailed model of how moral distress can arise for families of Veterans/PSP who experience mental health concerns. It demonstrates how organizational culture at Departments of Defence, Veterans’ Affairs, and public safety groups exclude families, exacerbating a sense of moral distress. Implications and recommendations for Veteran/PSP organizations and health professionals to promote more meaningful involvement and consideration of families is discussed. Implications and recommendations for Veteran/PSP organizations and health professionals to promote more meaningful involvement and consideration of families is discussed in the body of the paper. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In honor of National Mental Health Awareness Month, protecting, optimizing, and defending our mental health is vital to our well-being and the readiness of our military force. Staying healthy is more than just taking care of your body. A healthy mind is a healthy body. Stigma can be a barrier to a service member seeking support for their mental health. Recognizing mental health as part of overall health and changing attitudes are keys to addressing it. In today's fast-paced health care environment, it's more important than ever to prioritize mental health to build resilience. No matter what you are facing, you don’t have to go at it alone. It’s ok to ask for help. Reaching out is a sign of strength. Mental health care is health care. Make defending your mental health part of your health care routine, and don’t wait until you are in a crisis to get help. When we think about post-traumatic growth, we often focus on personal healing—rebuilding our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. But an essential component of this journey is often overlooked: service to others. At Second Responder, we believe that by serving our community, we not only give back but also create space for our own healing. For first responders, veterans, and their families, engaging in meaningful work that benefits others can be a powerful catalyst for growth. It reconnects us with our purpose, strengthens our sense of identity, and fosters resilience. When we step outside of ourselves to help those around us, we discover that our experiences—no matter how difficult—can be a source of strength and inspiration. Service allows us to transform our pain into purpose, our struggles into strength, and our challenges into opportunities for connection. Through acts of service, we heal. Through community, we thrive.
