Professional Learning Days are fundamental to provide our teachers to always be on the cutting edge of the teaching, education and academic skillset. Recently, our Primary teachers at St Brigid's College participated in a professional learning workshop delivered by Knowledge Society. The 1-day workshop unpacked the Science of Learning and Cognitive Load Theory and how it is translated into high impact instructions for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The session also emphasised the need for ‘getting reading right’, to improve student outcomes in literacy and covered the pace and fidelity of phonics, the introduction of close and critical reading as strategies to improve reading competence and the important of encouraging the use of more ambitious text.

The most common barrier to academic success reported by students in our surveys is a lack of adult encouragement. This barrier, often rooted in biases about which students belong in rigorous courses, significantly reduces student participation and success in programs like AP and IB. To boost student success, barriers like adult mindsets must be identified and shifted. In our next webinar, Kim Becraft of Montgomery County Public Schools and EOS’ Erika Cabrera explain how together, we are doing just that. Register here: https://lnkd.in/e2Px84hi

Join Tonya Gilchrist tomorrow for some major myth-busting about IBL. At her standalone TIES session, you’ll unpack: ✅ What inquiry can be (and what it's not). ✅ Ways to honour agency (plus pitfalls to avoid). ✅ How to design authentic, concept-based transdisciplinary units (vs forced fits). We hosted a fantastic session with Ms. Pooja Nagpal from the Central Square Foundation yesterday, attended by over 700 educators and parents. We explored the intricate world of large-scale educational assessments. It's surprising to find that about 50% of students in regular classrooms struggle to read simple English sentences. Interestingly, many educators we've spoken to are taken aback by this statistic, with some even questioning its relevance to their own schools. Why might this be the case? This disbelief often stems from the different emphases of assessments: while some focus on theoretical knowledge from textbooks and curricula, others emphasize practical skills and their application. Check out this clip where Ms. Pooja Nagpal discusses this crucial distinction. Stay tuned for more enlightening highlights from our conversation with Pooja!
