Cells cleansing themselves by removing pathogens, unfolded proteins, and malfunctioning organelles, is a process called autophagy. This is an essential process for cell stability and balance which malfunctions in cancer cells. The authors synthesize two highly fluorescent compounds, called Boron Dipyrromethenes (BODIPYS), to target lysosomes and lipid droplets in cancer cells. Upon irradiation with light, they generate molecules called Reactive Oxygen Species that trigger cancer cell death by inducing autophagy. The use of these BODIPYs, as markers in cancer diagnostics, and in therapeutics using light (Photodynamic therapy), is an effective alternative to chemotherapy or invasive treatments for cancer, which cause side effects.
