ONational Carers Week 2024 - Do 1 Thing “There are only four kinds of people in the world––those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.” Rosalynn Carter, Former US First Lady Care and caring are universal and forever. And it's so easy to show someone you care. When you do you're either paying it back, or paying it forward. PrimeLife Partners consider #Care to be one of the four essential pillars of The #LongevityEconomy, along with #FinancialSecurity, #SecurityofHome, and the opportunities and challenges of older consumers, including #digitalenablement. We're holding our Longevity Economy Leaders Roundtable on Care next week. At the Roundtable we'll again present novel insights including original data, exciting examples of innovation, a full range of perspectives, and collaborative opportunities. And the product? Practical solutions and accelerated #innovation and a host of recommendations for all stakeholders. Knowing that you'll have the care you need, when you need it, and at an affordable cost, is fundamental to #ageing with dignity. With more than 90% of #AustralianSeniors planning to #ageinplace, in their own homes, the #AustralianGovernment's reform of #agecare to enable #supportathome and #homecare, these changes are just in time. Just in time for the younger wave of #BabyBoomers, and for the coming wave of people "Gen X" starting to turn 65 in just a few years. But there's a big difference between the generations in a very important respect: fewer and fewer people will reliably have a home to age in. That's because #homeownership is declining steadily. More and more people will be renting. Why not try one of these: "I really appreciated how you cared for me when you.............." "I really admire how you care for your mother/father/grandparents/ neighbours/students....." "Can I help you in any way in caring for your mother/father/grandparents? Give you a break? Bring dinner over? A cup of tea? Something from the shops? "Thank you for caring. That means a lot." Show them you care..... Yesterday was World Kindness Day – A perfect reminder for organisations to consider the incredible dedication and resilience of unpaid carers within their teams. Carers give so much of themselves, often balancing work with intense caregiving responsibilities at home. Small acts of kindness in the workplace—whether it’s flexible hours, access to support resources, or simply recognition—can go a long way in showing them they’re valued and supported. Investing in carer-friendly policies isn’t just a kind gesture; it’s a powerful way to promote well-being, reduce burnout, and retain talented, committed employees. How does your organisation support the carers in your team? Let’s keep kindness at the heart of our workplaces all year-round. 🌍 #WorldKindnessDay #SupportCarers #WorkplaceWellbeing

It's National Carer's week. Did you know that a carers right to take leave applies from the first day of employment now? An employee can take carer's leave to give, or arrange care for a dependant who needs long term care. A dependant can be a spouse, partner, child, parent or someone else who relies on them for care. Employees can take up to one week of carer's leave every 12 months, in half days, whole days or a whole week. An employe may choose to pay their employees for this type of leave, but they don't have to. 🟢Supporting Organisations to Support Carers: Building a Culture of Sustainable Care🟢 Carers are the backbone of our communities, often balancing work, caregiving, and personal well-being without sufficient support. As demands grow, it’s more crucial than ever for organisations to actively support unpaid carers within their teams, providing tools and environments that promote resilience and sustainable self-care. Through my work, I help organisations understand how to build carer-friendly policies and create a culture that acknowledges and supports the unique challenges faced by caregivers. Some practical steps include: ▫️Flexible Work Policies: Enabling carers to manage appointments and emergencies. ▫️Access to Resources: Providing information on respite services, counselling, and financial assistance. ▫️Education on Sustainable Self-Care: Offering training and workshops to empower carers with techniques that build resilience and prevent burnout. Organisations that support carers not only boost their teams’ well-being and productivity but also foster loyalty and long-term engagement. Let’s work together to create spaces where carers feel valued, understood, and empowered. If your organisation is interested in making this a priority, let’s connect! #SupportingCarers #SustainableCare #WorkplaceWellbeing #CaregiverSupport #MentalHealth #EmployeeWellness #Carers

We’re supporting #CarersRightsDay by raising awareness of the vital contribution that carers make for their families, communities and wider society. Earlier this year, we introduced an enhanced carer’s leave policy for all of our people who have caring responsibilities and need help balancing their work with commitments in their personal lives. Annabel Murdoch, a document controller based in Manchester working with United Utilities, used the policy to look after her 100-year-old grandmother, who was still living in her own home. With this year’s theme of ‘recognising your rights’, Belle shares her experience: “My Nana was elderly and was suffering from dementia, and for the last couple of years I have been doing my best to care for her, such as taking her to appointments and attending each day. Being able to use Costain’s flexible carer’s leave has made a huge difference – it meant we could spend more time together in her final few months. “My line manager has been incredibly supportive throughout and Costain’s approach to #dynamicworking meant I was able to work from Nana’s house whilst she was on end-of-life care so I could be present for her. With that support and backing from my employer, I didn’t need to worry about work during what has been a very difficult time in my personal life.” We're proud that our range of #inclusive leave policies support our people to fulfil their personal commitments and goals outside of work. This is National Carers Week. So today’s post is about #caring responsibilities. For me, being a carer is like being on a roller coaster - with extreme highs and lows; going from 0-100 in seconds without warning; moments where the ground falls away under your feet, when you are in a long dark tunnel that seems never ending, and when your stomach churns with anticipation / anxiety over what might happen next. It is wonderfully fulfilling, but it is also really exhausting and frustrating at times. (If you know, you know.) I want to highlight some of the chaos behind the scenes in my house over the past 2 weeks, to give a flavour of how much working carers manage. There is so much chaos that it won't fit into the word limit for this post - so please see the comments! As a carer, the pressure to always do more for my loved ones is relentless. They are unable to advocate for themselves, or to navigate bureaucratic systems, and so I feel a strong sense of responsibility to support them. I lose sleep over it. I feel guilty and frustrated as it never feels like I have enough time to manage it all; nor do I feel like I am good enough at any of my roles, at home or work, because I am always juggling so much. At times, it is overwhelming, lonely and isolating (even with a great personal support network) to navigate and advocate for my loved ones within educational, healthcare and social care systems that are under resourced and underfunded. The purpose of this post is not to elicit sympathy or pity. I just want to shine a light on how MUCH carers have to manage behind the scenes. You may never see the full extent of how much your employees and colleagues carry. Caring can impact all aspects of a person's life, from relationships and physical/mental health to finances and work. So how can you support the carers in your team? - Check in with them regularly; and don't ignore signs of struggle; - Recognise that carers need adjustments too, and ask them what they need. Things like flexible working / working from home allow us to manage medical and school appointments that are almost always scheduled during the working day; - Vary the time of team socials - many carers find it a struggle to stay behind after work, and may end up missing out on valuable team social interactions; - Leaders in the UK, extend the statutory unpaid carer leave of one week into PAID carer leave, just like Kingsley Napley, Sackers and other firms have done. This will not only ease financial worries of your carers; it will show your employees that you are invested in supporting them and their families to thrive. In the 2024 Carer Wellbeing Survey, respondents were asked about the types of challenges they faced as Carers. The most common responses carers had were: 1) fear for the future of the person being cared for (67.5%) 2) fear of not having enough money to be able to care for the care recipient/s (58.0%) 3) feeling too much responsibility fell on them as a caregiver (55.8%) 4) fear of not being able to continue care for the person (51.8%), and 5) feeling unable to access enough support from health and other services for the person/people they care for (48.6%). Let these points sink in for a moment. These are heartbreaking. These are not just statistics, these are people who love and support their loved ones with legitimate fears for today and the future. If you know a Carer, take the time to show them how amazing they are and do something practical to help them. Even the smallest of gestures can make a positive difference to their day. In a months time, Carer's Notebook will have the privilege of meeting thousands of amazing Carers at the Care Expo in Sydney on the 15th and 16th November at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney). We look forward to hearing their stories and introducing them to the Carers Notebook app which was developed to help Carers. We hope the app reduces their stress, enables them to share the mental load and facilitates better outcomes for those they care for. #showThemYouCare #NationalCarersWeek #CostOfCaring #careexpo #Careexposydney #sydneyhealth #sydneycommunity #agedcaresydney #healthaustralia #aushealth #carersaustralia
