As both One Capital and Coral Capital have been focused on hiring since we closed our most recent funds, we ran an event to talk about venture capital and the various career paths. There was a lot spoken ‘off the record’ for those that came in person, but we’ve also put together a video ready for public viewing (in Japanese). What made the panel particularly interesting was that both firms have such different approaches to venture capital. One Capital is a specialist firm primarily focused on SaaS. Coral Capital is a generalist firm that invests in SaaS, but also Deep Tech, consumer, and many other areas. One Capital positions itself as a ‘hands-on’ firm, while Coral Capital is a “hands-if” firm (we're there if you need us, out of your way when you don't). The difference in views provided the ingredients for a great debate on why each of us have built our firms in certain ways. Ultimately, there are many ways to win in VC and the approach that fits you is a matter of preference and fit. I hope this is helpful to anyone considering a career in venture capital. As a Techstars mentor, venture partner at Pioneer Fund, and YC founder, I have access to thousands of high-growth companies with exceptionally talented operators. The best companies I know are all: - hiring less full-time, US-based talent - hiring more remote-first talent overseas - leveraging offshore talent as well as AI to increase efficiency And the results are staggering. I’m biased, but companies like Spotify, HubSpot, and Automattic use Arc daily to meet highly vetted, English-speaking candidates globally at ~50% of the salary you’d give someone in the US to do the same work. Not only that, but in a world of efficiency, hiring remotely can be faster than hiring for in-office roles as well. Are you operating your business like a founder of the future? Or will someone in Techstars, YC, and similar communities eat your lunch when you’re forcing your employees to #returntooffice because you think it’s a competitive advantage (when it’s not)? Founders don’t always make right decisions when it comes to hiring talent for their startups. I am one of them. In the last two years, I have been proved wrong about my hiring instincts more times than ever. And I am so glad about it! I used to think non-tech folks can’t do well in the tech industry. Rohit Jain proved me wrong. He was a core finance guy who turned out to be one of our strongest champions at Fyno. I thought remote hiring would not work out for our early-stage business, and we should stick to getting talent who lived in the same city. 1/4th of Fyno’s staff today is remote, and they are among the most hard-working and skilled professionals I know. I used to prefer candidates with experience at startups. Two of our current team members have never worked at a startup before this but you’ll never be able to tell. Their agility and passion for work are unmatched. I have realized that all founders hold biases while selecting candidates. So the best solution is to not make this decision by ourselves. Involving more team members, with diverse experiences and different opinions, can help take the best call. In the end, it all boils down to how sincere, committed, self-driven, and positive the individual is. No other tag matters. #entrepreneurship #remotework #hiring #startup

You can empathise with how much of a pain fundraising is, and understand the value Angels can bring in the early-stages of company building.
