As a parent, you imagine a world where birth is safe, sacred, loving, and a celebration for you and your family. However, in the United States, this isn’t the birth reality for many women, especially those with Black and indigenous backgrounds, due to long-standing systemic racism in U.S. health care and social systems. This #MothersDay, we are raising awareness of and addressing birth equity to improve the lives of women of color and their families in San Diego County. This #WBW, we are focusing on #closingthegap, enabling pregnant women to experience good quality and equitable access to healthcare all throughout their pregnancies. Currently, only 28% of workplaces are #lactation friendly in the U.S; most of them are high-income jobs, discouraging low-income and women of color from breastfeeding. Providing spaces to freely breastfeed can incentivize 25% more new mothers to partake in this practice. This time last year, I was in the middle of a financial/personal crisis, but it was important for me to participate in #zetadayonthehill in support of #maternalhealth and #maternalmentalhealth due to my own experience with #blackinfantmortality so my Blue and White family ensured I made it. Zeta Day on the Hill is a day of advocacy and empowerment for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. We will continue to advocate for the passage of the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act. In the U.S. maternal mortality rates are significantly higher for minorities than other races. This racial disparity is a critical issue that highlights systemic inequalities in healthcare access, quality, and treatment. The Momnibus Act emphasizes the need for holistic and culturally sensitive care for pregnant and postpartum individuals. It focuses on providing support throughout the entire perinatal period, from before pregnancy through the first year postpartum.
