On Monday we announced our free plan after 3 years of being sales-led. Today I’ll explain why we made that change ⬇️ (and why I’m glad we started as sales-led) 1) Why I’m glad we waited → Sales-led let us get to know our customers better We wanted to make sure Navattic wasn’t just helping customers build interactive demos but successful, converting demos. Working closely with customers through sales + cs let us figure out what our top-performing customers were doing differently. Things like: 1️⃣ Keeping demos between 8 - 15 steps 2️⃣ Focusing on key aha moments vs “how-tos” 3️⃣ Customizing demos by use case, personas, or features After we felt like we had a good idea of those best practices - we scaled those learnings by analyzing 18k+ demos in our State of the Interactive Product reports (2 years in a row). 2) Why we went PLG now → PLG opens up a new GTM motion Heading into 2024, like a lot of SaaS, we noticed a bit of a slowdown. Budgets are tight. Marketers we met at events often said they wanted to try Navattic but were hesitant to ask for budget before they could prove its value.* Side note: This is why you should bring your founders to events. Neil, Randy, and I were all hearing this which made it a lot easier to align. 3 years in we knew we couldn’t rely on one GTM motion forever. And with scalable learnings from our reports - it felt like now was the time to try. That’s why for the last 7 months, our team has been building our free plan. We still have a long way to go, but those 7 months let everyone get more comfortable and work out internal processes around introducing a free plan. You’ll see posts from me, our team, and our advisors over the next few weeks on more behind-the-scenes of building our PLG motion. ------------------------------------------ *The concern about asking for budget before providing value is also why we wanted to go freemium vs a free trial. (I’ll elaborate more on that in another post)
