Even though we at Damovo are not involved in the Olympic Games, we can't help but be inspired by this event. 5 things I learnt from HYROX Dublin 1. It is a privilege to be fit to compete in a HYROX competition. When Marie-Claire McGreevy and I were doing our running laps there were two ladies in their 70's taking part. It made me think would I still be doing HYROX? Would I be fit for it at 70? In my own head, my personal identity is someone who is physically fit and strong. When I imagine myself at 87, I think of this wee woman who people point at and say, "see yer one, 87, look at the goes of her!" The price of that future self is to train, stretch and eat as clean as possible now. The ultimate act of self care is discipline now for that 87 year old in the future. 2. Don't let anything hold you back. There was a HYROX Doubles team and one of the women was in a wheelchair. She did every lap and I watched her on the Ski Erg with awe. It challeged me to think would I still have the courage to compete if I was in a wheelchair? What self imposed disadvantages am I putting on myself that are holding me back? If its possible to compete in a wheelchair then it's possible for any of us to do anything we put our mind to. 3. Read the instructions Marie-Claire and I had done all the hard work. Training, running and hot yoga consistently. Our discipline was high, habits good but we failed at the first hurdle. We should have read the instructions for the laps and we ended up with 2 x 3 minute penalties. We stopped, asked for help plus read the scoreboard and got ourselves back on track. Sometimes you need to go slow to go faster. 4. Celebrate the wins 🏆 When we reached the podium my first thought was... how could we have been even better...what stations did we drop time and how could we improve? What would be even better would have been if I'd relished the moment... just been present. A lesson to take a breath and stop to enjoy the wins before the indepth critique. 5. Having a partner you trust, admire and respect is mission critical. Before the starting gun Marie-Claire reminded me to box breathe. In for four, hold for four and out for four, hold for four and repeat. All the small things that the right partner does to set you up for success.

ONE MINUTE FASTER… My latest Hyrox race resulted in me shaving one minute off my previous time. So it got me thinking… In the five weeks since my last Hyrox race in Toronto, I’ve trained six days a week, spent hours in the gym, ran 15-20 miles a week (while still rehabbing a hamstring injury), continued to log food every day, reduced body fat and cut 5 pounds, and drank almost a gallon of water every day… And all just to be one minute faster? Absolutely! Because it means so much more than just one minute…that minute represents -The days that I showed up for myself to train when I felt less than motivated -The healthy food choices that I made that would fuel my training -Prioritizing my recovery, so I could rehab my hamstring and not develop new injuries -Making sure I was getting adequate sleep Staying focused on my goal to improve That one minute represents the small improvements and gradual steps that are sometimes so painstakingly slow that you don’t even notice them…but they’re happening. That one minute can make all the difference when you’re trying to set a new personal record while holding a plank, running a little extra, or on a larger scale for our first responders out there…fighting with someone who is trying to take your gun. There’s a lot of growth in that one minute. So here’s to celebrating all of the “one minutes” out there. The wins, though seemingly small, will add up to some major progress over time! Who knows, maybe next race…I’ll be two minutes faster.

Since I’m on a short active vacation, I thought this would be a good moment for a work-life balance post. Last weekend, I faced not only an intense challenge but also a profound sense of accomplishment as I completed my first HYROX race. But the pain is matched by a sense of joy and fulfillment. Special thanks to my wonderful wife, Sandra Jaworska who supported me at every stage, giving me strength with her presence. Containing eight distinct exercise stations wedged between 1km runs, Hyrox events draw competitors from across the globe. Tasks include a whole heap of wall balling, sandbagging and the carrying of farmers before an inevitable stagger over the finish line in a blaze of sweaty glory. One of these killer stations involves 1,000 metres of rowing and it’s as charming as it sounds. The row is often a gut-check moment as it signifies the start of the second half of the competition.
