🎙️ "The plastics industry is at an incredible turning point..." says Chris Lefteri, MA (RCA), London based material designer. Lefteri — during his visit to K — reflects on the remarkable evolution of the industry over the past decades.
🚀 He emphasizes that the challenges that come together with the huge potential of plastic have sparked innovative developments, pushing designers and manufacturers to rethink how plastics are produced, used and disposed of.
But hear for yourself!
What are you thinking about the state of the plastics industry?

🚀 Composites Breaking Boundaries 🚀
Let's talk about ✨Sustainable composite materials NAFILean-R and rCF NFPP✨
Faurecia is the market leader in sustainable vehicle interiors and has set itself the goal of reducing the CO2 footprint of its materials by 87 percent by 2030.
The portfolio of NAFILean and NFPP biocomposite materials, which are used for instrument panels, center consoles and door trim, for example, makes a decisive contribution to this objective. NAFILean-R is a fully recyclable composite material based on natural fibers (e.g. hemp). It consists of around 20 percent organic content in combination with a polypropylene matrix that is up to 100 percent recycled. This results in a weight reduction of up to 25 percent.
rCF NFPP (recycled Carbon Fiber Natural Fibers and Polypropylene) is a novel composite material consisting of 40 percent natural fibers, 50 percent polypropylene and 10 percent recycled carbon fibers. The combination with natural as well as recycled carbon fibers achieves a weight reduction that reduces the greenhouse potential by up to 50 percent.
Faurecia Interiors' sustainable composite materials NAFILean-R and rCF NFPP won German Innovation Award in 2022.

🤷🏻♀️"Why don't they just replace this piece of #plastic with a #biodegradable material??" 🌿
Who hasn't given this feedback (in their mind) to the producer of some product? These are questions we asked ourself 3 years ago when starting our study together with #PhD Academic Mattia Italia, Dipartimento di Design of Politecnico di Milano
What is the path for us to take to #transition towards a fully #sustainable model?
Not only looking at our own company, but at the full #system around it: from our employees, our current knowledge and skillsets, all the way to our suppliers, our clients as well as final consumers.
Making a change in a material (let alone all materials) has an impact on our complete ecosystem. To give you some hypothetical examples on the implementation of a new (biodegradable) material:
👷🏾♀️ What if till today our engineers only have expertise in plastic?
They'd need to be re-schooled to get them up-to-speed with the strengths and limitations of a new material, and so on.
🚛 What if our suppliers don't have the new material?
We'd need to scout new, reliable suppliers, create a new relationship with them. But we'd also need to understand what happens with our old supplier. Are they depending on our business to survive and pay their employees? If so, can they transition to the new material as well?
🏭 What if the new material is not compatible with the current production line?
We'd need to find alternatives to integrate the material, adjust the existing lines, create new processes.
We believe it is important to realize that a transition is #complicated. It doesn't just impact you as a company, but it impacts the full #ecosystem around your company: individuals, teams, suppliers, consumers, partners, clients and so on.
So you need to be prepared, take the right steps, and involve your ecosystem in the transition since the beginning. Stay tuned for more posts on how to do this!

Although some changes may seem simple or insignificant at the product level, they can have unforeseen consequences on the company system and value chain. This is why in the transition towards sustainability with DELES Group we have tried to connect and design a pathway that is aware of the different levels, microscopic and macroscopic.
Stay tuned to find out what and how we have taken into account in the transition path.

We would like to announce Mr. Jesús García Turégano from Cadel Recycling Lab as our Official Speaking Partner at our upcoming "𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞" that will take place as planned on the 𝟐𝟕𝐭𝐡 - 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 in Berlin Germany!
Jesús García, chemical engineer, has worked in the field of Businees Development and Process Engineering for the Plastics Recycling Sector.
He also has experience in Plastics industries for different applications like Flexible Packaging and Automotive Interiors.
Cadel was created in 2014 as a pioneer in plastic circular economy solutions. CADEL has been working on the development and commercialization of an innovative deinking technology that removes printed ink from plastic surfaces and allows obtaining recycled material with properties similar to those of virgin plastic. Other decontamination solutions for plastic industry have been created.
In 2021, Cadel sold the patent for this revolutionary process to the multinational EREMA, which, together with its subsidiary KeyCycle, holds the marketing rights.
With the acquired experience and know-how in plastic recycling CADEL has developed a new and powerful tool based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to determine the quality and safety of recycled plastics

Our team at Creavis has made significant progress in the devulcanization of rubber. Collaborating closely with experts from the Evonik Silica and Evonik Silanes, we have developed a special formulation using vinyl silanes to break the strong sulfur bonds in vulcanized rubber.
This teamwork is a crucial step towards better utilizing used rubber as a valuable raw material. “That brings us much closer to the key targets of sustainability and resource efficiency in this sector,” says Dr. Christian Mani Mani, Project Manager Circularity at Evonik.
In the picture on the right, you can see him together with Rupert Schnell and Bettina Gerharz-Kalte from the team of Creavis’ New Growth Area Circularity.
