An Air New Zealand aircraft sits at the end of the production line at Beta’s sparkling new manufacturing plant. Flying into Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh (KOSH) for EAA AirVenture is a challenging endeavor due to the intense air traffic during the convention week, making it crucial for pilots to thoroughly review the procedures and policies outlined in the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024 Notice. This document, effective from July 18 to July 29, details necessary arrival and departure procedures for the 71st fly-in convention and includes updates based on pilot feedback and FAA recommendations. With over 10,000 aircraft expected and new changes such as a TFR in Milwaukee airspace due to the Republican National Convention, even experienced pilots must stay informed and prepared. Key procedures include the updated FISK holding procedure and ATC assignable transition points like Endeavor Bridge, Puckaway Lake, and Green Lake, designed to manage traffic and ease congestion. Preparation is critical, as highlighted by EAA’s vice president of advocacy and safety, Sean Elliott, who emphasizes the importance of thoroughly understanding the 2024 Notice. With Wittman Regional expected to handle up to 148 takeoffs and landings per hour, careful planning and adherence to the detailed procedures will ensure a safe and exhilarating experience for all pilots flying into the event. At #XPO24, Eve Air Mobility's Matthew Land described the value of AUVSI advocacy work as "moving the needle even further" and "ensuring this entire industry is punching above its weight." 💪 What's next: On June 4th, Matt and our other AAM Advocacy members will join us for AUVSI's 2024 Hill Day, where we will urge Congression to: •Collaborate with states and localities on the infrastructure required for AAM operations. •Conduct robust oversight and remain engaged in the FAA's Innovate 2028 initiative and on implementation of the recently-passed FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, to ensure regulatory timelines on commercialization of AAM aircraft keep up with the pace of industry. •Issue the Powered-Lift Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) as soon as possible, taking into consideration feedback received from industry. •Appropriate full funding for both the AAM Infrastructure Pilot/Grant Program and Electric Aircraft Infrastructure Pilot Program.

During my recent flight over Edinburgh, I was able to capture the air streamline over the wing (airfoil). When we think about objects moving in the air, the first image that probably appears in our minds is that of an aircraft. The airfoil is an important part of an aircraft structure and is responsible for producing lift and drag. Airfoils experience lifting force and the counteracting influence of drag when they move in the air. The shape of the airfoil plays a crucial role in overcoming air resistance. Airfoils are streamlined to minimize the drag force imposed on the body by air. Airfoil streamlining improves the usefulness of the airfoil components–for example, aircraft wings–by increasing the ratio of lift to drag. Airfoil streamlining enhances the lifting force produced by aircraft wings at the expense of a little drag.

An excellent few days in Warsaw at the World Overflight Risk Conference 2024 hosted by Osprey Flight Solutions, EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the University of Southampton. So much thought-provoking discussion but for me the key takeaways were: 💡the importance of OSINT in facilitating risk management through providing timely and effective information; 💡the challenges the aviation industry and we as their insurers will face over the coming years as technological advances will increase the capability of nefarious actors who may wish to target aviation; and 💡 the importance of continued dialogue between all of those involved in ensuring safer skies to help meet the challenges of the near future.
