New product: Moonlight Pipes Bent Volcano Handmade Briar Pipe, New While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern. Of all of the various design elements that are constantly being innovated or updated in pipe-making, one that has received far less attention than others is texture. Many pipe-makers pride themselves on improvements made to smooth and sandblasted finishing techniques, but far fewer explore new approaches to other finishes, such as rustication styles. This pipe from Ondrej’s Moonlight make has its own ideas regarding the broad latter category. It is a partially smooth finished volcano shape with an under-slung shank, but the shank and the base of the bowl are hand-carved with a sinewy patterning reminiscent of the fibers of tree bark. Comparisons may be drawn to Paul Larrysson Hubbart’s tree trunk pokers, though while Larrysson tended towards species such as the English oak for inspiration, Ondrej appears to have chosen something like a corkscrew willow or a coastal tea tree. The smooth areas of the bowl are beautiful too, though, being covered in bird’s-eye briar patterns and a brown-sugar stain. New product: Ardor Urano 2023 Bent Bulldog, Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked - $350 Like many Italian workshop brands, Ardor pipes are a family affair. The name itself is an acronym of Angelo Rovera and Dorelio Rovera, father and son pipe-makers who created the brand in 1972. The Rovera family’s history with pipes goes back much further, however, as Angelo’s own father, Francesco, had previously established the Sociedade Rovera pipe company with his brothers in 1911. All Ardor pipes are completely hand-made from briar that has been seasoned for at least 4-5 years, and the brand is noteworthy for its playful and innovative approaches to design. As a result, Ardor pipes are both quintessentially Italian, while also being somewhat different, having a style that is wholly their own. I’ve categorized this pipe as a bulldog, but I’ve done so because the shape of this Ardor doesn’t have an established name. It shows parallels with the “surfing bulldog” and “eskimo” shapes carved by Tom Eltang and many other artisans, but it isn’t exactly one of those either. What it does that is comparable to those shapes is that it warps and stretches the familiar lines of a bulldog; the shank has four sides, but it is also wider than it is tall; these sides also do not dissipate completely when they meet the bowl, resulting in a “lip” that ultimately runs parallel to the bottom of the pipe’s rim section, where bead-lines would traditionally be placed. It is a bold design, but it’s also highly ergonomic, as the concave recession that runs around the bowl, between the two lips, slides perfectly between the thumb and fingers. Whoever said that form and function was a binary choice? This Ardor is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating from the Rovera workshop. SATIN and SATEEN WEAVES: Satin is a warp faced rearranged twill and sateen is a rearranged weft faced twill. Thus satin is the reverse side of sateen weaves. These weaves form an important category of weaves. They are used in combination with other weaves, particularly in case of ornamented fabrics. The striking feature of these weaves is their bright appearance and smooth feel. The basic characteristic of satin/sateen weaves are : >They are either warp or weft faced weaves. >Have no prominent weave structures. >Only one binding point in each end or pick >No continuous twill lines >Have poor seam strength due to thread mobility >More thread density is possible in warp and weft >More mass per unit area is possible >Have less binding points and more float lengths Use of move numbers (intervals of selection) is necessary to construct these weaves. In the construction of satin/sateen weaves, the stitching points of warp or weft for a given repeat size is done by the use of move numbers or stitch or float numbers. The move numbers are selected according to the repeat size of the weave. In choosing move numbers for the construction of satin/sateen weaves, the following rules are to be adopted: 1-The move number should not be equal to the repeat of the weave 2-It should not be one less than the repeat size 3-It should not be a factor of the repeat size, and 4-It should not be a multiple of the factor. Contemporary Czech pipe-making is a fascinating scene. From the long-established presences of Olrdich Jirsa and Karel Krska,  to more recent talents such as Biftek and Eclesias, the country’s artisans don’t seem to have so much of a ‘national style’ as a national inclination towards designs that are daring even compared to the Danish scene. This Moonlight ‘Barnacle’ would seem to fit that description. As the name suggests, it mimics the organic and almost unsettling, clustered form of its titular marine invertebrate. It is a strange and beautiful pipe, with its shape dressed in an unorthodox marine-themed contrast that still allows the briar patterns underneath to shine.
