New product: Ardor Urano 2023 Bent Bulldog, Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked - $350 Like many Italian workshop brands, Ardor pipes are a family affair. The name itself is an acronym of Angelo Rovera and Dorelio Rovera, father and son pipe-makers who created the brand in 1972. The Rovera family’s history with pipes goes back much further, however, as Angelo’s own father, Francesco, had previously established the Sociedade Rovera pipe company with his brothers in 1911. All Ardor pipes are completely hand-made from briar that has been seasoned for at least 4-5 years, and the brand is noteworthy for its playful and innovative approaches to design. As a result, Ardor pipes are both quintessentially Italian, while also being somewhat different, having a style that is wholly their own. I’ve categorized this pipe as a bulldog, but I’ve done so because the shape of this Ardor doesn’t have an established name. It shows parallels with the “surfing bulldog” and “eskimo” shapes carved by Tom Eltang and many other artisans, but it isn’t exactly one of those either. What it does that is comparable to those shapes is that it warps and stretches the familiar lines of a bulldog; the shank has four sides, but it is also wider than it is tall; these sides also do not dissipate completely when they meet the bowl, resulting in a “lip” that ultimately runs parallel to the bottom of the pipe’s rim section, where bead-lines would traditionally be placed. It is a bold design, but it’s also highly ergonomic, as the concave recession that runs around the bowl, between the two lips, slides perfectly between the thumb and fingers. Whoever said that form and function was a binary choice? This Ardor is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating from the Rovera workshop. It also comes with its original box and sleeve. Details: Length: 5.8″ / 147.3mm Bowl Width: 0.86 / 21.84mm Bowl Depth: 1.64″ / 41.65mm Weight: 1.9oz / 56g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/zIy7fN #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: Moonlight Pipes Bent Volcano Handmade Briar Pipe, New While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern. Of all of the various design elements that are constantly being innovated or updated in pipe-making, one that has received far less attention than others is texture. Many pipe-makers pride themselves on improvements made to smooth and sandblasted finishing techniques, but far fewer explore new approaches to other finishes, such as rustication styles. This pipe from Ondrej’s Moonlight make has its own ideas regarding the broad latter category. It is a partially smooth finished volcano shape with an under-slung shank, but the shank and the base of the bowl are hand-carved with a sinewy patterning reminiscent of the fibers of tree bark. Comparisons may be drawn to Paul Larrysson Hubbart’s tree trunk pokers, though while Larrysson tended towards species such as the English oak for inspiration, Ondrej appears to have chosen something like a corkscrew willow or a coastal tea tree. The smooth areas of the bowl are beautiful too, though, being covered in bird’s-eye briar patterns and a brown-sugar stain. The design is completed by a tasteful green ebonite stem and a cap at the base of the shank for easy cleaning. Details: Length: 5.5″ / 139.7mm Bowl Width: 0.78 / 19.81mm Bowl Depth: 1.56″ / 39.62mm Weight: 2.1oz / 60g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/P2TAMY #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: Moonlight Pipes Barnacle Handmade Briar Pipe, New While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Contemporary Czech pipe-making is a fascinating scene. From the long-established presences of Olrdich Jirsa and Karel Krska, to more recent talents such as Biftek and Eclesias, the country’s artisans don’t seem to have so much of a ‘national style’ as a national inclination towards designs that are daring even compared to the Danish scene. This Moonlight ‘Barnacle’ would seem to fit that description. As the name suggests, it mimics the organic and almost unsettling, clustered form of its titular marine invertebrate. It is a strange and beautiful pipe, with its shape dressed in an unorthodox marine-themed contrast that still allows the briar patterns underneath to shine. The design is completed with a hand cut amethyst ebonite stem and a cap at the base of the shank for easy cleaning. New product: Comoy’s Designer 900 E 1711 Smooth Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked Comoy’s is a historic brand in pipe making, and possibly the most historic brand in the making of briar pipes. Though originally founded in 1825 by a French family from Saint Claude, France, production of Comoy’s pipes was soon moved to London, England, where it established itself as one of the quintessential English pipe companies. This looks to be a very special Comoy’s, and one very different from the make’s usual offerings. The Designer series seems to have been Comoy’s answer to the Collector series from Dunhill; hand-turned stummels without set shapes, whose designs were at the whim of their carver and of the briar itself. Regarding the latter, this one has plenty of beautiful bird’s-eye and cross grain patterns, so its ‘designer’ clearly did have a good vision for what this pipe could be. The pipe also comes with a matching three piece pipe tool, also carved from briar, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen from Comoy’s before. The pipe is completely unsmoked, and the tamper is also unused. Both come with the pipe’s original presentation case. As for its provenance, the pipe was, according to the collector who sent it to our trade-in program, purchased in 1978. He included the pipe’s original receipt, shown in the last photo – adjusted for inflation, the 110 US dollars he paid for it would therefore be approximately 550 US dollars today. New product: Mastro Geppetto Rusticated Cherrywood, Estate Briar Pipe Unsmoked Mastro Geppetto pipes are made by the Italian workshop brand Ser Jacopo. One could call them Ser Jacopo’s series of ‘affordable’ pipes, and while this would be correct purely from the standpoint of price, it wouldn’t be entirely fair to them in other regards. Geppetto pipes are hand made from the same high-grade briar as Ser Jacopo pipes, but the former do not use the plateau cuts that the latter does, which are more expensive; Geppetto pipes also tend to be simpler shapes, meaning they do not require the use of the highly-technical flexible drilling machinery that Ser Jacopo’s wilder shapes do. One thing I really like about Ser Jacopo’s Geppetto pipes is the wider variety of finishes they explore. For example, while I’ve categorized this Geppetto as a “rusticated” pipe, that doesn’t really do it justice. That’s not to say that rusticated pipes aren’t nice, but this one is arguably a “figural” design, given that it has been carved to resemble tree bark. Given that the pipe’s shape is that of a cherrywood – i.e., a forward-leaning sitter cut to resemble the trunk of a cherry tree, along with the old French pipes that were made from these trunks – I presume the matching of these two design elements was deliberate. In any case, it’s a great looking pipe, with some extra flair added by a cumberland-style lucite stem. This Geppetto is also completely unsmoked, having come to us via our trade-in program. Details: Length: 5.2″ / 132.0mm Bowl Width: 0.78 / 19.81mm Bowl Depth: 1.43″ / 36.32mm Weight: 1.4oz / 40g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/XJe8EN #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: Stanwell Antique 136 Sandblasted Bent Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang. Stanwell’s Antique series was one that paired some of the make’s classic designs with a partial sandblast finish, a flared, ebonite stem, and an acrylic ferrule reminiscent of dark amber. It is, as far as I’m aware, one of the few series produced by Stanwell that significantly altered the original shapes such pipes were based on. This one, for example, is a shape 136, which was originally a relatively simple, saddle-stem bent egg designed for Stanwell by Tom Eltang. I asked a friend of mine, who knows Stanwell pipes very well, when he thought it might have been made. He suggested that, owing to the white, crowned S stem logo, as well as the lack of a registration number, the pipe was likely an early 1980s product, as Stanwell switched to a golden, crowned S as standard later into the decade, before dropping it around the turn of the millennium. The condition is very good. There is some finish fading on the rim, as well as what looks to be a small nick in the acrylic ferrule on the pipe’s underside, but these are cosmetic, and I’d say they don’t especially detract from the pipe’s “antique” aesthetic, let alone its smoking properties. I’ve reduced the price accordingly, in any case. New product: Bennie Joe Partially Rusticated Acorn Handmade Briar Pipe, New Bennie Joe Pipes are made by Bennie Joe, an Indonesian artisan based in Jakarta. A trained architect and part-time pipe-maker for much of his life, he took on the latter full-time after a downturn in the property market during the dark days of 2020 and after. An interesting aspect of Bennie Joe pipes is that they are made primarily with hand tools, rather than many of the woodworking machines pipe-makers employ. While the chambers and draft holes are drilled, the body of the pipe is formed using hand tools, creating genuinely freehand shapes reminiscent of those made in mid-century Denmark. It should come as no surprise that one of Bennie Joe’s heroes is the late, great, Bo Nordh. There’s certainly more than a little of Lars Ivarsson in the shaping of this pipe, but it also reminded me of another master carver who was greatly influenced by Ivarsson, and who took Ivarsson’s shapes in unique directions, that being Todd Johnson. It’s Todd Johnson’s blending of finishes when it came to variations on Ivarsson’s shapes that is the point of reference here; more specifically in alternating finishes for the bowl and shank section. With Johnson, the design would be worked in a way that it almost seemed like the bowl was being “unwrapped,” or even as though it was bursting forth from the shank. With this Bennie Joe, the rusticated bowl looks almost as if the rind of the pipe has been peeled away, exposing a coarser, wilder entity lurking just beneath the surface. Details: Length: 5.5″ / 139.7mm Bowl Width: 0.77 / 19.55mm Bowl Depth: 1.43″ / 36.32mm Weight: 1.9oz / 54g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/HvDPNh #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

❤️ Shrunk oak flooring is a kind of keeping natural and traditional dried oak surface with unique appearance and characteristic knots and cracks. 💕 You’ve heard about Shrunk Oak flooring, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering what makes it so special. Is it just another pretty face in the world of flooring, or is there some real science behind its allure? 💖 Well, let me tell you, we’re about to dive deep into the fascinating science that transforms ordinary oak into the flooring superstar known as Shrunk Oak. 💓 The Shrinking Process: How It Works Now, the real magic happens in the kiln. The slow drying process causes the wood to contract, creating a naturally textured surface. It’s like wood’s version of getting a facelift, but way more natural and far less Hollywood. Understand the shrinking process. ❤️ SHRUNK oak floors show an untouched surface with natural surface undulations and some random marks of a band saw. This unique surface is created through a special way of drying or ‘shrinking’ directly after the freshly oak raw material is sawn at the mill. The subtle aged look has a very organic touch. It feels soft and cozy and is characterized by beautifully brushed 3D knots and cracks and some occasional end splits ❤️ SHRUNK oak can also be ordered brushed & unfinished, ready for finishing. SHRUNK oak is very suitable for smoking and reactive coloring treatments. #pisomadeira #shrunk #oak #unfinished #woodflooring

I have been recently asked on multiple occasions, how can one identify original Burma teak wood when purchasing? Here are the 5 major criteria to consider: 1. Color and Grain: Color: Burma teak typically ranges from a golden yellow to a rich brown color when freshly cut. Grain: It has a straight, slightly minute grain sometimes slightly wavy grain that is typically even and consistent. 2. Texture: Smoothness: Burma teak has a fine, oily texture that feels smooth to the touch. The wood can sometimes have a slightly oily or greasy feel due to its natural oils. 3. Odor: Aroma: When freshly cut, Burma teak may have a distinctive, fragrant odor that is sometimes described as leather-like or mildly aromatic. 4. Defects and Imperfections: Knots: Original Burma teak tends to have fewer knots compared to other teak varieties or lower-quality substitutes. Warping and Cracks: It is less prone to warping, twisting, or cracking compared to inferior quality teak from Africa, America. 5. Density and Weight: Density: Burma teak is known for its density and weight, which contributes to its durability and stability. It is heavier than many other types of wood used in furniture and construction. Which can be lab tested. Tips for Identification: Compare with Samples: If possible, compare the wood in question with known samples of Burma teak or images from reputable sources. Consult Experts: Buy from reliable source. Look out for presence of company over internet and name in the market. Seek advice from professionals or experts in woodworking or timber who have experience with identifying different types of teak. Substitutes: Be aware that there are substitutes and imitations of Burma teak, which may be marketed under similar names or descriptions. These substitutes may not possess the same quality or durability as genuine Burma teak. By carefully examining these criteria—such as color, grain pattern, texture, odor, and absence of defects—you can better identify original Burma teak wood and distinguish it from other types of teak wood. #burmateak #tectonagrandis #boatbuilding #europe #wood
