This is perhaps the most concise (less than 90 seconds) explanation of #DEI that I have heard anyone provide for those who may be questioning it's value to their respective organizations and it's importance with respect to recruiting top talent. I would like to expand on #JamesFeltonKeith's thoughts by applying them to healthcare and #HealthEquity. Our market is our patients. We understand that many patients have a choice in where they receive their care. There is data that suggests that race and ethnicity concordance between patient and provider does impact the way in which our patients respond to the care that we as health care providers believe we are delivering. It builds a level of trust that credentials alone do not provide. That increased trust improves patient engagement and satisfaction with their care. And while we know that many other social determinants of health (#SDoH) have greater impact on outcomes, the reality is that the most important relationship in healthcare is between the provider and the patient. When a person trusts their providers and feels emotionally and psychologically safe under the care of their providers, then better clinical outcomes and quality of care naturally follow. In short, let's not do our communities a disservice by reducing #DEI to a metric, a program, a slogan, a catch phrase, or even worse, an ideology. Representation in your workforce at ALL levels (from the lunch room to the board room) brings diversity of thought through the points of views that are uniquely experienced by those of different racial, ethnic, gender, nationality, and religious backgrounds. Through those diverse perspectives and approaches to patient care we can reduce disparities in treatment of our patients and improve access to care. Let's celebrate the fact that we are a strong nation because of our diversity, not in spite of it.
