Ever heard the saying 'fake it till you make it'? Well, let me share a fascinating story from Richard Branson's autobiography.
In “Screw It, Let’s Do It,” Richard Branson shares an ingenious story of Edina, who was tasked with selling ad space for a fledgling magazine. Facing resistance from major companies, she devised a bold strategy. Edina approached both PepsiCo and The Coca-Cola Company claiming the other had already committed to #advertising. To sell the illusion, she created two dummy magazines, each featuring #ads from the rival brand.
This audacious move worked! Both giants believed they were in a race to outdo each other and signed on. Edina’s clever tactic secured the magazine’s success, proving that sometimes, taking bold risks and thinking creatively can turn the tide in your favor.
Sometimes, a little creative persuasion can turn a bluff into reality. It's not about deceiving, but rather demonstrating confidence and potential.

100 years of Walter Lilly: 'What makes Walter Lilly?'
There are many factors which have contributed to Walter Lilly’s longevity over the last 100 years, so we ask ourselves ‘what makes Walter Lilly?’
Walter Lilly has been a people company since its humble beginnings, relying on the specialist skills and expertise of our employees and subcontractors to execute the complex, prestigious, and highly unique projects we are honoured to work on. Priding ourselves on delivering high quality, much of our work demands exceptional skill and meticulous attention to detail to achieve the fine finishes symbolic of our reputation.
In the 1990s, a philosophy of accountability and responsibility was introduced throughout the organisation by then Managing Director, Doug Blyth, which continues being embedded to this day under the leadership of Chris Butler. This focuses recruitment efforts on hiring the right person for every role, investing in the next generation of industry staff and ongoing training for existing employees. This approach enables all of our people to flourish, assuming greater responsibility and accountability within their respective roles in line with the mantra — if we can grow our people, we can grow our business.
The spirit of the family business thrives not only within Walter Lilly but throughout our supply chain, where several long-term supply chain partners are now run by second or third generation family members.
Beyond an excellent repeat business rate, at the heart of Walter Lilly is bettering the wider society and helping to shape the future of the built environment. Here and now, we relish a challenge as much as our company predecessors and make it our mission to ensure that every new build, refurbishment, and restoration we deliver reaps tangible benefits for our clients and local communities.
