Very soon you’ll be working alongside a humanoid robot. It sees, hears, talks, moves, and works like humans. It could also be more intelligent than you! It matters because then, you’ll need a new set of skills to work together with AI that’s in a human-like body. Figure 01, the humanoid robot seen in the video seems to have quite impressive dexterity. Its maker, Figure AI, wants its humanoids to do daily work autonomously in manufacturing, warehousing, and retail, to overcome labour shortages. With the breakneck pace of AI development in the past year, human-level machine intelligence of AI could be achieved sooner. According to Elon Musk and futurist Ray Kurzweil, AI will achieve human-level intelligence by 2029. One of the Godfathers of AI and a retired Google scientist, Geoffrey Hinton said that AI could be smarter than people by 2028. The market for humanoid robots is still nascent, but there’s already a packed arena of companies making them. Among the heavily funded ones are Norwegian 1X Technologies, Sanctuary AI, Softbank Robotics, Hanson Robotics, UBTECH Robotics, Agility Robotics, Boston Dynamics, Tesla, and the one in the video, Figure AI. Analysts are projecting that in 2030, about 250,000 humanoid robots will be sold in a market that could reach USD35 bil by 2035. Humanoid robots have many potential applications, other than doing boring, repetitive, dirty or dangerous jobs that humans don’t want to do. In healthcare, it assist in surgeries with high precision, it can monitor patients, offer companionship to patients, do physical therapy, and alleviate the workload of healthcare professionals. In construction, mining and manufacturing, it can assist with tasks requiring human dexterity, perform dangerous tasks, handle hazardous materials, and do routine work. In hospitality, humanoid robots can serve as hotel concierges, entertain guests, and do other customer-facing roles. In education and training, humanoid robots can serve as educational tools, providing interactive learning experiences for students and professionals. They can simulate real-life scenarios for medical training, emergency response drills, and more, enhancing the learning process. As humanoid robots become more integrated into your workplace, they can also influence social aspects of work, including team dynamics, human-robot collaboration, and ethical considerations surrounding employment and the role of people in the workforce. You, as an employee, would need to consider what matters when humanoid robots as intelligent as you, come in to work alongside you. Matters such as retraining and how to thrive in an increasingly automated and technology-driven workplace. You would need to complement the capabilities of robots with your own unique human skills. Comment below to share ideas about what new skills we all need to work with AI and alongside humanoid robots. #ai #chatgpt #llm #generativeai #aiapplications #aichatbots
