Being a parent to a neurodiverse child doesn’t make me an expert in neurodiversity. It just makes me more aware of the support he needs in order to complete certain tasks or activities. But what about when he grows up and enters the world of work? It is estimated that between 15 and 20 per cent of people may be neurodivergent and businesses need to understand how to adapt to accommodate their needs and provide reasonable adjustments. This doesn’t just mean referring someone to an occupational health team; it needs to be more holistic. It means raising awareness and equipping managers with the right skills to be able to identify and reduce/remove barriers in the workplace. On Friday, Mo (Harford) Bury and Amanda Jackson Mental Health and Neurodiversity Trainer facilitated a brilliant session which did just that. There were so many takeaways (together with a very intense Lego building exercise 😅) and an emphasis on the unique perspectives of a neurodiverse brain. In the words of Harvey Blume: “Neurodiversity may be every bit as crucial for the human race as biodiversity is for life in general. Who can say what form of wiring will be best at any given moment?” Great to spend time learning with: Peter Humpherson, Alan Hunter, Nicola Little, Joel Nixon, Helena Flavell, David Morgan, Jayne Holliday and Daniel Greatrix.
