2024 isn’t the easiest time to be in the Polyethylene (PE) business. With Argus predicting a supply glut of 8–10 million metric tons (6–8% of global production capacity) by next year, manufacturers have to transition their business strategy from supply to demand-led. Improving sustainability can be an ideal way to differentiate your product in an oversupplied market. This means using new low-emissions plastics and having the courage to sell them at a realistic price, as opposed to using a loss-leader pricing strategy. Product Designers and Engineers must also keep up with the expanding market of bio-plastics, to ensure they’re using the most sustainable materials available. Mechanical Recycling of Post-Use Bioprocessing Plastic Containers Tuesday, September 10th, 2024 The aim of this collaboration work between Sanofi/Veolia and Sartorius was to technically assess the feasibility of the mechanical recycling of bioprocessing bags. Materials from different sorting, and recycling strategies have been characterized, for their suitability for further use. Quantitative physical and mechanical tests and analysis (FTIR, DSC, TGA, density, MFI, color, tensile, flexural, and Charpy choc) were performed. The data show that these recycled plastics could be oriented towards second use requiring physical properties similar to equivalent virgin materials. A comparative life cycle assessment, based on a theoretical framework, shows that mechanical recycling for end of life presents the advantage of keeping material in the loop, without showing a significant statistical difference compared to incineration with regards to the climate change indicator. https://lnkd.in/gu7PN_59 #aspenalert #biotech #bioprocess
