Reflecting on the Coaching for Success Session: Yesterday, I had the pleasure of working with participants from Ivy Lim Scape Co Ltd, Allkin Singapore, Kidney Dialysis Foundation, Singapore (KDF) , Bizlink Centre Singapore Limited, ARTDIS (Singapore) Ltd, and Singapore Pools. Each came eager to learn how to become a more effective coach in the workplace, and the two days together provided eye-opening insights into the art and science of coaching. For many, it was a realization that coaching isn’t just about giving advice—it’s about cultivating essential skills like global listening and asking powerful questions. One key moment was when participants asked about the difference between a mentor, counselor, and coach. This distinction proved crucial in helping them understand how to step into their role as a coach with clarity and purpose. Here’s a quick breakdown we shared: Coaching: Focuses on performance and potential, helping the coachee achieve goals by changing behaviours or mindsets. Mentoring: Focuses on development, transferring knowledge and motivating the mentee through the mentor’s experiences. Counseling: Focuses on the person, aiding individuals in overcoming personal challenges or trauma. I like to share four important takeaways for anyone stepping into the coaching role: "Coaching is facilitating the development, learning, and performance of another." – Myles Downey "You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him discover it within himself." – Galileo "Coaching is best learned through experience. It's about creating an environment where the coachee can move toward their goals." – Timothy Gallwey "Coaching is about the who, not the what. Focus on who the coachee wants to become before developing action plans." – Mika Coaching is an invaluable tool for unlocking the potential within your team. We are happy to launch the autumn edition of the Mentoring Academy for HR Professionals. The program is developed by EMCC Romania in collaboration with HR Hub Romania and is specifically tailored to meet our needs as HR professionals, whether in the role of mentors or as designers of mentorship programs. The academy is accredited by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council & successful candidates will receive: Automatic recommendation for the EMCC Individual Accreditation EIA (an individual Mentor level award at Foundation level) from EMCC Global. A certificate of accreditation from CCMI which you can use to claim 35 hours of CPD. This year, the best gift under the tree isn’t something wrapped in paper - it’s the incredible journey of graduating from my Human Resources studies at Singapore Polytechnic. Reflecting on this milestone, it’s not just about the topics I’ve mastered, like HR Technologies, HR Innovation through Design Thinking (with a Distinction grade!) and Coaching Psychology for Managers, a Psychology-focused module that’s part of a three-module set. It’s also about discovering my strengths, building determination and, proving to myself that it’s never too late to excel. Studying wasn’t my strongest suit in my youth and, my previous diploma didn’t end with the results I had hoped for. But maybe that’s what lit the fire in me to push harder this time. The journey wasn’t always easy - balancing work and study, navigating differing perspectives, persuading others and, refining my own thinking.
