I’d like to share my thoughts on Plastics Europe’s latest biannual report, “The Circular Economy for Plastics”. While the report offers valuable insights into the progress we’re making toward sustainability, I believe it overemphasizes #plasticrecycling as the core solution to the plastic waste problem. Instead, we should shift our focus to #plasticreuse and #plasticrepair, strategies that are highlighted in ⭐️Articles 4 and ⭐️6 of the report and that deserve far more attention. The articles rightly stress that reuse and repair have far greater potential to reduce waste and extend #productlifecycles. By encouraging the design of durable products that can be reused multiple times or easily repaired, we reduce the need for new plastic production in the first place—something recycling can’t achieve on its own. In fact, recycling often leads to #downcycling, where plastics lose their quality and usability after each cycle, as ⭐️Article 3 acknowledges. This limits the material’s value and requires constant input of virgin resources. ⭐️Article 5 points to the EU’s ambitious goal of making all plastic packaging recyclable by 2030. While this is a positive step, we need to question whether simply making packaging recyclable should be the end goal. A truly circular economy minimizes single-use plastics and promotes systems where products are used and repaired repeatedly, before recycling is even considered. As ⭐️Article 8 emphasizes, industry collaboration is key to making this shift. At Plastic Repair System we are committed to this approach—rethinking the entire product lifecycle, prioritizing #reuse, #repair, and #redesign over recycling.
