Here are the key takeaways from the ACER 2024 Market Monitoring Report: - €4 billion was spent in 2023 to manage grid congestion, which increased by 14.5% compared to previous years. - Many TSOs are far from meeting the EU’s 70% transmission capacity requirement, with some only offering 30-50% of physical capacity for cross-zonal trading. - The delay in meeting this target is limiting market integration, renewable energy utilization, and price stabilization. The recently published “Transmission capacities for cross-zonal trade of electricity and congestion management in the EU - ACER 2024” highlights some pressing issues for the EU’s electricity market. As the deployment of renewable energy grows, congestion is increasing, resulting in more than €4 billion in system costs last year alone—60% of which were borne by Germany. The report emphasizes the need for advanced grid optimization to reduce these costs and enhance cross-zonal trading, particularly as limitations in grid capacity are curbing the potential of renewable energy. Without this optimization, we see renewable sources being curtailed and fossil-based energy filling the gaps, threatening the EU's decarbonization goals. A key recommendation from the report is the adoption of Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), which leverages real-time data to adjust transmission capacity. This is where Energiot comes in.
