Client: “𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐦𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦?” “𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐲.” As part of my BD training offering, this is a request for a proposal I just received. Common. But challenging. Immediately, a million skills jump to mind that lawyers need to sell themselves and their firm. Everything from personal touch to professional presence, trust building, client interviewing, listening, clear communication, presentation and pitching skills. But given half a day only, I need to drill down. What is THE most important one? As I am mulling over this, my top instinct is this: 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐲 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞. ❌ No matter how perfect the pitch, ❌ no matter how polished the presence, ❌ no matter how clear the communication, if I don’t feel ✅ 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 in the individual behind it, I would not trust them with my most important business matters. What is your take? What is THE most important skill lawyers need to sell themselves and their firm? What is it, that really “sells” a legal service? I am curious about your views on this! Do share below 😃 Yours, Claudia PS: I am tempted to call the program “𝐿𝑖𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑙𝑎𝑤𝑦𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 – ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒 𝑎 ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎 𝑙𝑎𝑤𝑦𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑐ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑐”. But I am yet to determine what version of this headline will appeal to the silver back decision makers of this Silver Circle Firm because I am pretty sure it’s not this one 😆
