Meet Ogechi: A SKILLS STAR's Journey with Skilled For Work Academy (SFW) Ogechi, one of our inspiring SKILLS STARs from Batch 4, shares her thoughts on the impact of Skilled For Work Academy (SFW) after years in the corporate world. With a solid 15-year career behind her, she initially questioned what more she could gain from a program named “Foundational Skills.” Yet, SFW proved to be an eye-opening journey, introducing her to new tools and knowledge that have reshaped her perspective on growth and learning. In her own words, Ogechi says, "Forget the name, Foundational Skill. I am not new to some of the tools, but I am new to a lot; in fact, there are some that I am just hearing the name for the first time." She reflects with a smile on the experience, amazed that even with her extensive background, there’s still so much to learn. Her journey is a testament to the boundless nature of knowledge, as she passionately adds, "This thing called knowledge is big!" Ogechi encourages anyone who has completed the GOP program to consider SFW as a next step, saying, "Yes, you need it after GOP." For her, SFW is more than just another program—it’s a transformative experience that opens doors to new skills and deeper insights, reminding us all that learning is a continuous journey, no matter where you are in your career. At SFW, you learn and gain clarity. At a subsidised rate of N107500/$129, you are equipped with the proper knowledge and skills. RÉSUMÓNDAY: My buddy has been taking complex courses outside of work to build their skillset and industry knowledge. Over the weekend they asked me where it should all go on their résumé since it’s not exactly ‘Education’. We came up with a new section called: ‘TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS' .. listing the most relevant courses to their ideal job. Clean, accurate, and concise, but also easy to understand. #resumetips #resumonday

My NYSC team members went from “I don't know how to use Excel" to "I solved the business problem using Visual Basic for Applications" in 4 months." We got there in 4 steps: 1. Assessing their skills and identifying the capabilities they need to get the job done. When they both joined my team this year, they were straight out of the university. And didn’t know how to use any data analysis tool. So, I suggested they start learning Excel from Mynda Treacy on YouTube. They did, with guidance from their Team Lead and regular check-ins. 2. Practising newly acquired skills to gain experience. Practically applying skills acquired to gain experience is tricky. Most learners skip this stage but refer to themselves as "Experts." It's like a tailor who didn't complete his apprenticeship or did "Freedom," before leaving his "oga" to set up his own shop for quick money. I didn't want a team member whose foundation was built on sand. That’s why we followed the "Knowledge → Skill → Experience → Expert" approach. With consistent practice sorted, they were ready to take on real business problems and start adding value. 3. Transforming their skills to value. Initially, they weren't confident about their newly acquired data analysis skills. Even with guidance, they made mistakes (which is okay). But after a few weeks, the only feedback their Team Lead had was data interpretation. As a result, they generated better insights. I didn’t have to jump in. 4. Building on their data analysis skill. My NYSC team members took initiative and learnt more Excel modules. As their data analysis capabilities improved, their confidence increased. And the quality of their outputs improved. Now, YouTube is their go-to learning platform for figuring out data analysis problems when they're stuck. What we do is coach them and provide feedback for growth. Was it easy? No. Did they struggle and complain? Yes, at the early stage. But was it worth it? Absolutely! They've been exposed to real business problems and honed their critical thinking and other skills in the process. Now, they're 10x better than when they started their NYSC programme months ago. Are they where they need to be? Far from it. There's still work to be done. We're taking it one day at a time. I encourage all managers to take on the challenge of coaching their inexperienced team members. You benefit from this first. (even before your organization does) Because you delegate and free up time for yourself to address strategic tasks. There's no perfect team member anywhere. When you embrace that perfection doesn’t exist, you find ways to improve your team's capabilities to deliver expected outcomes. Following a process that worked and taking action is what I’d choose any day, any time. --- Image by me. --- P.S: NYSC means "National Youth Service Corps." It's a mandatory 12-month programme Nigerian graduates under age 30, go through before they can work in the country.
