Excellent article and has real relevance today in increasingly 'skills-based' organisations: "Focus on your skills and how you will use them in the role. A quick search of what all employers are looking for throws up Communication skills, Teamwork, Adaptability, Problem-Solving, Leadership, Time Management, Creativity. What examples can you give of how you have used these skills?" These key transferable skills are in abundance in the over 50s workforce talent pool, often overlooked due to unconscious age-bias (conscious would be illegal right?). I’m aware this might make me sound like a bit of a dick, but one of the things that prompted me to start a funding consultancy was the number of calls I got from recruiters. Every week I was getting calls, pitching me part-time charity fundraising roles. Most of the positions were only five to 10 hours a week. So of course, these organisations were really struggling to fill these roles. But when you love the not-for-profit sector, it’s very hard to say no to these offers. I see the great work these organisations do. All the potential if only they had funds to plan long-term. I'd love to do all those roles, but they just won’t all fit into a working week. So, I thought, well, how can I help all these organisations out … And that’s when the consultancy penny dropped. Unsuccessful bids... whose 'fault' is it? Fundraisers: how much do you shoulder responsibility for unsuccessful bids? 🙋♀️ Non-fundraisers: how much do you attribute the success/failure of bids to individuals? As fundraisers, we are of course tasked with reaching income targets. It is our job to identify opportunities and secure funding. But, is it OK for fundraisers to feel so responsible - or even solely responsible - when there is so much else at play?
