🚀 One week to go until the third edition of the Cities Mission Conference 'Empowering Cities - the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission in Action'! The conference will take a deep dive into the remarkable progress from #MissionCities over the last year as well as delve into the challenges and opportunities as we continue to journey towards climate neutrality! Mission City mayors, deputy mayors, and practitioners will connect with the European Commission, representatives of national and regional authorities, NetZeroCitiesEU partners and other actors to forge collaborations and engage on Mission-critical concepts and groundbreaking ideas 🤝 The 2024 edition will be held in the framework of Valencia Cities Climate Week in #EUGreenCapital Valencia. The Valencia Cities Climate Week encompasses several key events alongside the Cities Mission Conference, in particular the European Urban Resilience Forum 2024 (#EURESFO24) and Energy Cities’ Annual Forum (#GraftingCities2024). 💚 We look forward to next week which will be an exciting and unique opportunity to create synergies and promote urban sustainability, as well as to find common solutions to achieve climate neutrality and resilience. 48 Swedish Cities - Together Towards Climate Neutral Cities 🤩 Last week, 48 Swedish cities, which represents more than half of Sweden's population, signed on to gather forces for the climate transition from local to global level. During European Viable Cities Day, the mayors from the cities, directors general from six national government agencies, representatives from the European Commission, other Swedish and international key players gathered to strengthen the mobilization for the climate transition across national borders. Local Citizens' Assemblies bring democracy closer to home. On climate, Lyon is a compelling case as the city doubles down on participatory governance through a tandem of initiatives. The first, a Citizen's Climate Assembly of civil servants, has already fed the city's vision toward carbon neutrality by 2030. The second, a Metropolitan Climate Assembly of citizens, is actively designing the 2026 Lyon's Territorial Climate, Air, and Energy Plan. This blend of expertise and residents' keen eyes ensures, at the very least, a 360° view of local needs and, at best, a stronger alignment between policies and local realities. 🚀 Exciting news for the EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities! 48 #MissionCities are set to receive €22.6 million through the Enabling City Transformation Programme, strengthening their efforts to achieve climate neutrality. ERRIN is pleased to see that 32 of these successful Mission Cities are from #ERRINmembers regions 🌍   Over the course of 18 months, these cities, through the 26 successful projects, will tackle systemic challenges and explore innovative solutions to scale up the implementation of their Climate City Contracts. The latest multi-cities to join the #PilotCities Programme are collaborating to achieve their shared vision of climate neutrality. These cities are testing specific pathways to decarbonisation through their innovative projects🌍 🌟 Germany's 'Climate City Dash 2.0' project involves Landeshauptstadt München, Stadt Dortmund, and Stadt Heidelberg working together to develop a comprehensive climate action dashboard, integrating data from various sources to provide real-time insights into urban climate performance. 🌟 Another German initiative, 'ENACT4CleanCities', brings together Stadt Leipzig and Stadt Dresden. This project focuses on enhancing energy efficiency and reducing emissions through innovative technologies and community engagement. 🌟 Ireland's 'Build CAPA-Cities' project unites Dublin City Council and Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí in a collaborative effort to strengthen climate adaptation and resilience strategies. 🤝The third annual Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission conference is set to take place in Valencia on 25 - 26 June. This prestigious event, hosted by the European Commission and NetZeroCitiesEU will bring together Mission City mayors, practitioners, and representatives from national and regional authorities to connect and engage on Mission-critical concepts and ideas. 🏙️ The 2024 edition, titled ‘Empowering Cities – the Climate Neutral and #SmartCities Mission in Action,’ will be an invitation-only gathering organised by the European Commission and the Mission Platform. The 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns (ESCT) in Aalborg called for stronger cooperation between the EU, national, and local levels to fast-track Europe’s climate neutrality. The conference reflected on 30 years of progress, urging integrated climate and sustainability strategies to meet global goals like the Paris Agreement and EU Green Deal. “The window of action to address crises like climate change is closing. We must take bold actions and make immediate investments to prevent further harm” said Martin Horn, Lord Mayor of Freiburg and President of ICLEI Europe. 🏙 Local governments are at the forefront of managing crises, including climate change. Capacity building is essential to equipping cities and communities with the right skills and expertise to mitigate its effects and achieve climate neutrality, but growing needs and limited resources make this a challenge. #PilotCities Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and Lunds kommun have designed their Pilot Activities to address these needs and create the conditions for innovative solutions to be developed! Lisbon recognised the need for increased coordination among all local actors to achieve the holistic vision required for effective climate action. Their Pilot, ‘LX Climate Lab’, will set up various structures and events to break down silos, encourage community involvement, and leverage innovative solutions to accelerate climate action in Lisbon. The city of Lund in Sweden has developed ‘CoPilot Lund’ to establish a new city transition support function, foster collaboration between city departments, enhance competencies across departments. Securing investment is also an important part of their Pilot Project: 80% of investment in climate-related initiatives need to come from sources external to the city, so the Pilot Activity will engage external stakeholders for this financing and investment.
