Successful start to the new series of events at Fraunhofer ITWM 🥳 Researchers from Germany and Austria met in Kaiserslautern to discuss current developments in multi-objective optimization 💬 The focus: »Mixed-Integer Multicriteria Optimization Problems« – a topic with high relevance for research and practice. The workshop, organized by Prof. Dr. Stefan Ruzika from Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU), Prof. Dr. Oliver Stein from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)) and our head of the »Optimization« division Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Kuefer, offered a platform for scientific exchange, lively discussions and the development of new ideas. 💪 In addition to the networking dinner, the conference offered a great opportunity to network at the »big round table«! Without a rigid seating arrangement, there was additional space for open dialog and creative ideas. Access to Research Infrastructure/Core Facilities was the topic of yesterday's meeting with the regional industry network in precision medicine. The discussion revolved around issues such as the importance of predictability, pricing models, tailored agreements, and queue systems.   The picture that emerged was clear: There is a strong interest for an increased share of industrial customers and collaborations. More and more research infrastructures now have offering structured services, advanced equipment, and expert knowledge to the industry. However, challenges remain, as opportunities vary depending on the infrastructure in question, given that usage, ownership, and financing models differ. A key takeaway from the meeting is that progress has been made in just a few years, thanks to new regulations and projects that have enabled targeted efforts to improve access.   For research-intensive companies within the Stockholm-Uppsala life science cluster, access to advanced equipment, services, and expertise are crucial factors for acceleration and growth — key components for regional sustainable development and continued attractiveness!   A big thank you to the speakers: Lena Lewin, Per Lek, Pontus Holm, Therese Fagerqvist and Hannah Karlsson who generously shared their insights, challenges, and opportunities, and thanks to everyone who participated! Erlangen as a Prime Example of Successful Industrial and Site Policy On April 27, an enlightening article has been published in the FAZ highlighting the remarkable development of the industrial site Erlangen over the past 30 years. Prof. Dr. Heinrich von Pierer, former CEO of Siemens and now Professor at our Chair, and Dr. Siegfried Balleis (longtime mayor of Erlangen) enumerate in this article some reasons and crucial decisions that led to this welcome development. In addition to being a key economic hub for Siemens and other important firms, the significance of Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) for this advancement is also emphasized.
