Local government councils in Australia and New Zealand are struggling to hire and retain the talent they need to deliver vital services to their communities. Involuntary turnover nearly doubled in Australian councils from 2018 to 2022, increasing from 8.3% to 15.6% annually, with staff turnover as high as 20% in the country’s rural councils. However, some local government councils in Australia and New Zealand are bucking this trend. They have partnered with Gallup to measure and improve their employees’ engagement and create a culture that promotes performance and wellbeing. In 2023, 34% of these councils’ employees were engaged and thriving at work, significantly higher than the 23% of employees in the region who were engaged and thriving. SPREADSHEET MONKEYS DON´T BUILD ENGAGEMENT OR A GOOD EMPLOYER BRAND. 1. Equip managers to engage their teams. Managers do heavily influence team engagement. But how do we make them better? My number 1? Stop promoting spreadsheet monkeys to management. Skills in Excel don't equal people skills. 2. Create a purpose-led employer brand. Purpose can be powerful, but... My number 2? Stop the BS. Empty "change the world" promises breed cynicism. Honesty is better! If you're profit-driven OR just looking for an exit (Founders????), own it. If there's a genuine purpose, make it real, not just marketing fluff. 3. Provide an employee experience consistent with the employer brand. Marketing fluff is marketing fluff and people will quickly see thru it. Consistency builds trust, BUT... My Number 3? Stop the condescension. Start by acknowledge every employee's humanity. Respect that their motivation is complex – they want to contribute, but also need fair treatment, dignity and actual agency. #leadership #management #employeeengagement #humanresources #workexperience #toxicworkplace #purposedriven #employerbranding #respectintheworkplace #founders
