We learned of some interesting misconceptions about how the pledge works, so we wrote a blog post covering five of them ( https://lnkd.in/dwKQRh5S) and summarised some highlights: 1️⃣ You do not have to donate at least 10% of your income EACH year – the 10% Pledge is a commitment to donate at least 10% of your lifetime income. 2️⃣ You can donate to any organisation you’d like, as long as you have good reason to believe it qualifies as a highly-effective organisation. Organisations not listed on the GWWC platform can count towards your pledge too. 3️⃣ The pledge signifies a serious commitment. It is not a legal document. 4️⃣ It IS worthwhile and valuable to sign the pledge even if you are already making the donations. Pledging publicly helps normalise effective giving and can multiply your impact. 5️⃣ There is more than one way to pledge: You can pledge 10%, more than 10% or 2.5% of your wealth instead of 10% of your income, if this amount is larger. By the way… our Pledge is now called 🔸The 10% Pledge🔸. It is still made through and operated by Giving What We Can. Add an 🔸 emoji to your name on socials to indicate you have taken a Pledge with us and spread the word! 🧡

Clever advertising? Or a missed opportunity? I’m no expert on advertising. I grabbed this packet of gum with the Canadian Blood Services logo from the “swag” table after donating. At first I thought, that’s a weird flex… but then I think I saw the intention: people offer gum to other people. It’s an opportunity to start a conversation. It might go something like this: “You donate blood? I’ve been considering it, but …. (Fill in any number of the thoughts I used to have about it before I finally took the plunge) “ The point is to open the conversation. It may lead to a new donor. I think a packet of gum is a great way to do it! What do you think? ps. Canadian blood services need more donors over the holidays than other times in the year.
