👉 I am pleased to invite you to a panel discussion hosted by the EU-LAC Foundation and the Ministry of Economy and Innovation in Hamburg, on the 26th of August. 📜 "Strengthening ties between Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. Benefits of Free Trade Agreements form a Hamburg perspective." 🌎 The Free trade agreements of the European Union (EU) and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries constitute a pivotal framework shaping political, economic, and social ties between both regions. Latin America, a vital supplier of agricultural and raw materials, and Hamburg, a significant hub for trade with LAC nations, share a long history of close foreign trade relations dating back 500 years. This enduring relationship, strengthened by collaborative efforts in industrial cooperation and strategic partnerships, continues to offer myriad opportunities for growth, especially in the context of digitalization and the need for diversified supply chains. Today, a coalition of 31 leading European business associations has come together to call for an ambitious and open trade policy to support the EU’s competitiveness and economic prosperity. Trade openness drives economic growth and job creation, with 1 in 5 EU jobs relying on exports. It benefits consumers by increasing choices, with 60% of Europeans acknowledging these advantages, and attracts foreign investments, fostering growth and innovation in the EU. Additionally, diversification in sourcing and exports enhances resilience and our ability to weather and overcome crises. These figures underscore the importance of maintaining openness and growth as the core elements of the EU’s trade policy. This requires a very conscious and deliberate prioritisation of policies aimed at opening new and diversified markets through trade agreements and reduced technical barriers to trade. Our thoughts for a successful EU trade policy for the next institutional cycle are detailed in the attached joint statement that we collectively endorse. In short, a successful EU trade policy must focus on a number of critical areas, including: - Strengthening the openness pillar of EU trade policy by pursuing new and renewed trade agreements and improving market access. - Having a dedicated trade commissioner for this exclusive EU competence. - Continuing to support the WTO and the international rules-based system to ensure a fair and predictable trade environment. - Increasing cooperation with third country partners and deploying trade diplomacy to support an ambitious open trade policy. The European Union's extensive network of trade agreements has proven instrumental in enhancing economic resilience and fostering growth. In 2023, EU exports to partner countries with trade agreements increased by 1.2%, while exports to non-partner countries declined by 2.2%. This underscores the tangible benefits of such agreements in promoting trade and economic stability. For instance, the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement, in force since 2011, has significantly boosted trade by eliminating tariffs and reducing non-tariff barriers. Similarly, the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, effective since 2019, has opened new opportunities for businesses by removing tariffs and improving market access for services and investment. These partnerships reflect the EU's commitment to building resilient economic ties that address global challenges and support sustainable development. By continually expanding and modernizing its trade agreements, the EU not only advances its own economic interests but also contributes to global economic stability. #EUEconomy #TradeAgreements #EconomicGrowth #GlobalTrade
