I have every confidence that this latest review of Australian R&D - or rather ‘strategic examination’ - will make largely the same findings and produce pretty much the same recommendations as every other review of R&D in the past 20 years. It will find Australia doesn’t spend enough on R&D, that what we spend is spread too thinly, that our innovation culture is poor, and that public investment in R&D isn't producing much in the way of tangible economic benefit. For this, universities will cop a lot of the blame. If we’re lucky, it might find that we put too much money into the wrong things. It will recommend changes to the R&D tax incentive; to university recruitment, performance assessment and promotion practices; IP laws; funding bodies; grant guidelines. It will almost certainly recommend more prioritisation and more funding for late-stage, commercially oriented research, despite the dial having already been turned too far in that direction in Australia. In the current environment it might recommend more interference with what universities decide to research, and how - but independent medical research institutes will escape scrutiny. The ‘strategic examination’ may even recommend a concerted national effort to boost investment in R&D, though as has been the case for the past 20+ years - since the extra funding tipped into R&D by the Howard Government, courtesy of the mining boom - this recommendation will come to naught. Any aspiration toward matching international or OECD benchmarks will be ignored, as always. I would love to be wrong. #RnD #research #ResearchandDevelopment #Innovation #productivity
The Australian Government is undertaking a strategic examination of Australia's research and development (R&D) system. An expert panel will lead this important piece of work 📢 The panel has 4 members, each bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge about R&D. - Robyn Denholm (Chair) - Emeritus Professor Ian Chubb AC - Professor Fiona Wood AO - Dr Kate Cornick The examination will consider how Australia can: - get more value from investing in research across universities, industry and government - harness and grow business investment in R&D - leverage our scientific strengths to help address national priorities and foster new industries - maximise the contribution of science and R&D to the broader economy - maintain our competitive edge. The panel will consult widely across Australia and deliver an action plan of recommendations to government. I am thrilled to share that I have successfully completed the COPPHA peer reviewing course, offered by #Peoples-Praxis in partnership with Public Health Africa and supported by #WACREN. This course is part of an important initiative to build capacity in public health, open science, and research methodologies, especially for professionals in low- and middle-income countries. Throughout the course, I gained skills in research evaluation, ethical review practices, and open publication of scientific findings. I extend my gratitude to Peoples-Praxis and WACREN for this enriching opportunity. I look forward to applying these skills to make meaningful contributions to public health research and practice. #Learningjourney# #PublicHealth# #ScientificWritting# #PeerReview# #PublicHealthAfrica# #Research#
