I am delighted to share an invitation to a new Summer Institute for a course called LEAD: Lifelong Education and Development. I hope you can share this invitation throughout your networks, especially with graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, senior undergraduate students (e.g., Honours), and collaborators or professional contacts. What? LEAD participants build skills in mentorship, strategic learning, academic resilience, navigating difficult conversations, and project management. The activities and the assessments are designed to be authentic and immediately relevant, in that they are tailored to the work/research that participants are currently doing. The course has already been piloted and formally offered, with fantastic outcomes, and we’re excited to be able to reach even more learners. Who? LEAD is designed for early career researchers/students from any discipline, including postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and senior undergraduate students. At any career stage, LEAD offers opportunities to further develop professional and lifelong learning skills, to help participants be more successful in their studies and career. Why? Fostering innovation and scientific discovery in today’s fast-changing world requires exceptional training for graduate students and other highly qualified personnel. However, many issues can plague research and advanced training environments, including steep learning curves where many professional and learning skills are rarely taught. Further, many equity-deserving groups disproportionately face barriers to success. Our team developed this course to better equip and empower participants with lifelong learning and professional skills and foster more inclusive, equitable, and productive research and work environments. Supporting students in taking LEAD is one way that professors can contribute to building equitable, inclusive, and diverse training environments, as increasingly required by granting agencies. How? Anyone is welcome to join us during our inaugural Summer Institute, August 26–30 at uOttawa and Carleton University; those who complete the course will receive a certificate. We welcome professionals! On Friday, August 30, we’re inviting professionals, educational leaders, and other stakeholders to join us for networking and to exchange ideas. We’d love to hear from you and have participants share their experiences with you. Please let us know if you can join us. We welcome professionals from industry, government, academia, etc. Our team is dedicated to making graduate education more equitable, inclusive, and diverse. On behalf of the LEAD team Isabelle Barrette-Ng, University of Windsor Connor Bourgonje, University of Ottawa Gino DiLabio, University of British Columbia Alison Flynn, University of Ottawa Kim Hellemans, Carleton University Jeremy Kerr, University of Ottawa Ashley Thompson, Carleton University

Selected as an Exemplary University Student in 2015 (First-Rank) In the competitive landscape of higher education, being recognized as an exemplary student is a noteworthy achievement that not only reflects individual dedication but also embodies the values of an academic institution. In 2015, I was honored to be selected as the first-ranked exemplary university student at my institution, an accolade that served as both a personal milestone and a responsibility to uphold the standards of excellence in academic and extracurricular pursuits. This recognition was the culmination of a rigorous journey characterized by a commitment to intellectual growth, active participation in university life, and the development of leadership skills. Academically, I consistently sought to challenge myself through advanced coursework and initiatives that encouraged critical thinking and collaborative learning. My efforts were complemented by a passion for research, leading to opportunities for publication and presentations at national conferences. Beyond academics, my involvement in various student organizations allowed me to cultivate leadership qualities and foster a sense of community. Serving as the president of the Student Council, I collaborated with peers to address student needs, coordinate events, and promote an inclusive campus environment. Engaging in volunteer work not only enriched my university experience but also instilled a lifelong commitment to service and social responsibility. The recognition as the exemplary student was not merely a reflection of my efforts but also highlighted the supportive ecosystem of my university. Faculty mentorship, peer collaboration, and access to resources played an instrumental role in shaping my journey. It reinforced the notion that success in academia is often a collective endeavor, underscoring the importance of community in personal development. In conclusion, being honored as the first-ranked exemplary university student in 2015 was a transformative experience that encapsulated the essence of scholarly achievement and community engagement. It served as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with such recognition and motivated me to strive for excellence in all future endeavors. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned during this pivotal time, committed to inspiring others in their academic journeys while contributing meaningfully to society #Exemplary_University_Student #First_Rank_University_Student #Culturally_distinguished_student #Distinguished_academic_student

As an educator, it is challenging to prioritize personal well-being and engage in activities outside academic work. One way to explore and play is through fellowships. *** Faculty fellowships are opportunities for professors to participate in focused professional development. Some are self-directed, while others are more prescriptive. Some are paid or supplemented, while others are designed more for networking and building new skills. I am an advocate for faculty fellowships as a way for us to benefit from experiential learning. Through fellowships, we step away from our research and classrooms and enter into a place where we are partnered with an organization, interact with educators at other institutions, or focus on learning specialized skills and approaches. There is nothing more valuable than these immersive experiences. In the past 10 years, I have been awarded six academic fellowships. ① 2014: I was awarded the Plank Center Educator Fellowship and partnered with Harley-Davidson Motor Company for two weeks in their internal communications division ② 2015: I was selected as an educator fellow with the Scripps Howard Foundation Visiting Professor in Social Media program and was partnered with the The Sacramento Bee for two weeks in their digital department ③ 2018: I was a Washington State University Provost LIFT (Learn. Inspire. Foster. Transform) Fellow, a program that focuses on the implementation of pedagogical innovations in curriculum ④ 2022: I was one of two career-track faculty members selected from an international pool of applicants as a Kopenhaver Fellow by The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication. ⑤ 2022: I was selected for the PhDigital Fellowship sponsored by the Knight Foundation. We spent six weeks in a boot camp learning how to become digital scholar-educators and lead curriculum innovation. ⑥ 2022-present: I started my journey as a faculty fellow with the WSU Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living and now serve on their marketing sub-committee Fellowships help professors reconnect with their passion for learning and teaching. I highly recommend that my peers seek out ways to immerse themselves, play, and try new things. #professoratplay #experientiallearning #immersivelearning #professionaldevelopment

As the new semester approaches, I am filled with a profound sense of excitement and anticipation for the academic year ahead. This time of renewal and opportunity is not only invigorating but also a reminder of the significant role we play in shaping the minds and futures of our students. It is a privilege to contribute to their growth and development, and I am wholeheartedly committed to fostering an environment where they can thrive both intellectually and personally. This academic year brings with it the promise of new beginnings and the continuation of our shared journey toward excellence. My dedication to our students' success remains unwavering, and I am enthusiastic about creating a supportive and dynamic learning atmosphere. I am determined to inspire curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and cultivate a passion for lifelong learning among our students. In addition to our educational endeavors, this year, I am particularly looking forward to advancing our research efforts, especially concerning the development of new tools and methodologies that can support clinicians and patients. Especially our team is looking forward to contributing towards the quantification of the effects of brain damage on speech and language. Research is the cornerstone of innovation and progress, and by exploring new ideas and methodologies, we can address some of the most pressing challenges facing society today. I am eager to engage with my colleagues and students in meaningful research projects that not only push the boundaries of knowledge but also have a tangible impact on our community and beyond. Our collective efforts in research and education have the potential to drive significant change. By working together, we can develop innovative solutions that address societal challenges and contribute to a better future. Whether through groundbreaking research, impactful community service, or the cultivation of a vibrant academic culture, we have the power to make a meaningful difference. As we embark on this new academic year, let us embrace the opportunities it presents with open minds and hearts. Let us strive for excellence in all that we do, and let us support one another in our shared mission of education, research, and community engagement. Here’s to a productive and inspiring semester, where we can collectively shape a brighter future for our students, our community, and the world. 📚 #AcademicLife #FutureLeaders #MakingADifference

Global engagement is increasingly recognized as a vital component in improving university rankings.such inclusiveness increases involvement, appreciation toward better quality scientific research and an improved educational system. There are various strategies to promote synergy through collaboration with international organizations and to welcome educators from around the globe. The presence of diverse individuals from different regions enriches the learning experience, as their unique perspectives enhance the educational process. Participation in global initiatives can also improve the quality and scope of educational services offered. Engaging in such programs encourages students and faculty members to adopt a global mindset, which boosts the institution's competitiveness and contributes to higher rankings. For universities aiming to thrive in today's rapidly evolving higher education landscape, such strategies should foster direct connections and collaboration among institutions.

Today I-TELL hosted an online panel discussion on "Global Classrooms, Local Challenges: Reflections on Managing International Postgraduate Cohorts" with three excellent speakers: Professor Liz Warren (The Manchester Metropolitan University), Dr Mazia Yassim (University of Westminster), and Dr Lilian S. (Queen Mary University of London). The event was hosted by Dr Katharina De Vita, Co-Director of I-TELL. Key takeaways: 🎓 The panel highlighted the importance of extending induction beyond the first week, providing information in digestible chunks rather than overwhelming new students. This "thin and long" approach helps international students better adapt to UK higher education. 🤝 Peer support emerged as a crucial success factor. All three universities have implemented student ambassador or champion programmes where previous international students help guide new cohorts, creating valuable connections and authentic support networks. 📚 On managing diverse classrooms, our speakers emphasised: 🔸 The value of understanding students' previous educational experiences 🔸 Creating spaces for students to process information in their first language 🔸 Building confidence through structured opportunities for engagement 🔸 Using technology thoughtfully to enable different forms of participation 🌍 Looking ahead, the panel reflected on emerging trends in postgraduate education: 🔹 A shift from quantity to quality in international student recruitment 🔹 Growing importance of collaborative international programmes 🔹 Diversification of target markets beyond traditional sources 🔹 Focus on sustainable cohort sizes to ensure quality student experience Thank you to our fantastic speakers and attendees for contributing to this important conversation about supporting international students in UK higher education. #HigherEducation #InternationalEducation #StudentExperience #ITELLGlobal

🌟 Leading the Conversation on Clinical Academic Career Development 🌟 This week I had the pleasure of leading an internal training session at the University of Buckingham Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences on Academic Citizenship and Clinical Academic Careers, guiding early years clinical colleagues through the exciting possibilities of blending clinical practice with academic pursuits. I emphasized the importance of thinking about career progression and what it means to truly be an academic citizen, referencing the University of Buckingham Promotions and Progression Policy. 💡 Exploring What Academic Citizenship Means: We discussed how #academiccitizenship isn’t just about #teaching and #research, but also about embracing #leadership roles and contributing to the university #community — whether it's through #mentoring, contributing to committees, or leading projects. 👩🏫 Key Topics Included: What a #clinicalacademic career looks like Experiences gained from current roles Teaching, research, and leadership opportunities Exploring qualifications like a Master’s or PhD, #AdvancedHE Fellowship, and #AoME membership 🔗 Career Development and Networking: We also touched on the importance of networking—making connections at conferences, collaborating with peers, and taking responsibility for substantial projects as part of building a well-rounded career. It’s always a privilege to help others see the potential in an academic career and how academic citizenship is not just a duty but an opportunity to shape the future of both healthcare and education. Exciting times lie ahead for these early years clinical academics as they take on these roles that blend their passion for teaching, research, and leadership with the responsibilities of academic citizenship. #AcademicCitizenship #ClinicalAcademicCareers #Leadership #MedicalEducation #CareerProgression #TeachingAndResearch #Networking #PhD #AcademicLeadership
