A recent Think Wood webinar, Mass Timber 2030: Preparing Your Practice, brought a unique perspective to the topic of mass timber design by uniting three different stages of the project pipeline in a discussion group moderated by Think Wood’s Director Katie Gerfen. Created for architects wanting to specify mass timber, it prepared them for how to deal with questions from other AEC professionals that might derail that specification. Topics covered included the impact of mass timber on a project’s value and ROI, how architecture firms can expand their mass timber expertise, and how designers can overcome hesitation within their firm or from clients about the swiftly evolving nature of connections, acoustics, fire protection, and other design principles. After hosting the webinar for a live audience of architects, it is now available on-demand. Watch it here: https://hubs.ly/Q02WsX3q0

WoodWorks' efforts in the light-frame realm have always focused on encouraging architects and engineers, either new to wood or with experience on smaller projects, to design five-story or taller buildings—and helping them do so successfully. In the first quarter of this year, for example, WoodWorks: ⚒️ Hosted 34 education sessions on light-frame wood topics for 9,144 participants. ⚒️ Began assisting on 39 new light-frame projects between five and eight stories (totaling 6.3 million sq. ft.). ⚒️ Reported 16 light-frame projects between five and eight stories when they went to construction. To achieve scale, WoodWorks plans to increase regional deployment of resources in areas of the country where midrise projects are being built, but it’s rare to see light-frame wood buildings over five stories—and to better understand the barriers that exist in specific markets. Architects and designers, how do you balance heart and rationality in your work? For architect Shigeru Ban, “It’s not really about making buildings, it’s about expressing my feeling. When I visit a site, I feel the potential beauty of the site, or a potential problem. And I just draw what I feel.” Despite his ability to draw a vision for the future, Ban isn’t driven by innovation. Instead, his focus remains steady on building solutions for problems. When I was doing my A-levels I considered applying for physics degrees but decided to follow a path into Architectural Technology instead. I've been fascinated by the Passivhaus and Enerphit standard since uni and I think my interest in it has always stemmed from my interest in building physics. Over the last 5 years I've also become very aware of the impact we're having on our environment. I've made lifestyle changes to reduce my personal environmental impact yet with 25% of UK emissions directly attributable to the built environment we can have an even larger positive impact on the environment through our work. There was a great article in the AJ recently by Scott McAulay about the impact we can have as designers. Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) have just launched their climate society, there's a highly climate-conscious architect running for RIBA president (Duncan Baker-Brown), and we're very likely to have a more climate focused government starting in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully we're reaching a tipping point for positive change as an industry and nation rather than an environmental tipping point (and focusing on the positives helps keeps my climate doomism at bay too)! 😅 I'm super grateful to LSI Architects for supporting me to undertake the Passive House training and I'm really looking forward to putting all the learning into practice. I've already worked on some great retrofit projects at LSI, such as Morley College mentioned in the article - here's to the many Passivhaus, Enerphit, and other low carbon new build and retrofit projects ahead of us. If you're thinking of becoming a Passive House Designer, I highly recommend Coaction Training CIC. The course was great and all the tutors were super knowledgeable with backgrounds and experience spanning the breadth of the industry. Undertaking my first exam in almost 10 years was a bit intimidating (where has the time gone since graduation?) but the course prepared me well for it.
