The EUPD Group made its mark globally, visiting 17 countries, attending 19 trade fairs, and hosting 27 exclusive events that engaged over 7,000 attendees. Through SSDC, we brought some of these moments to life with engaging interviews at trade fairs and insightful Booth Walk-Throughs, offering exclusive access to cutting-edge innovations and the expertise of our partners. Highlights of the EUPD Group included events like The smarter E Europe, where global leaders showcased groundbreaking advancements, and the European Sustainability Week, where we celebrated pioneers integrating sustainability into their strategies and reporting. Last June, the SUNERGY community, through the EU-funded project SUNER-C, contributed to the co-organization of the event: “Harnessing Renewables for a Sustainable Future – Exploring CCU, Power-to-X and Solar-to-X Innovations”, together with the European Innovation Council, IMEC (EnergyVille), EuroTech Universities Alliance, and other EU projects. On Wednesday, I had the privilege of attending South Summit 2024, where I was able to attend a couple of panels in which #sustainability experts and startup-leaders shared their insights into building a carbon-free future and the use of deep tech and deep science to speed up the #energy transition to #renewables. Here are my key takeaways from the discussions: Building a Carbon Free Future: - Poor nations will not be poor forever, and as their income grows, they will need energy to support and sustain this income growth. However, as poor nations become rich, their development is powered by using fossil fuels. Richer countries in Europe and the Americas need to invest in the necessary innovations required to cut the costs of renewable energies, so that emerging economies can grow using clean energy instead. - The world will continue to be mainly reliant upon traditional fossil fuels until renewable energies are better managed and acclimatized for widespread use. - The cost of wind, solar and batteries have crashed significantly in the past few years. In that regard, water, solar and wind energy could drive decarbonization at the right price, which would be determined by consumer and customer behaviour. - Nuclear energy is still fairly controversial in the clean energy space; however, it is still more in line with the goals of sustainability than other forms of energy. - Making fossil fuels more expensive through excessive taxation, as is the current practice in Europe, does not have the same effects as making renewable energy cheaper. - Startups in this space are advised to develop the best business models and applications to scale their operations using tech that is currently available, instead of waiting on miracle technologies that are still under development. Deep Tech in the Energy Transition: - Research and development capabilities are strong in the EU and the US, but the US is better at implementing that research and converting into actual businesses and business models. - Large corporates in the energy industry are encouraged to partner with each other to invest in #deeptech and #deepscience startups, in order to foster healthy long-term relationships with these new players and continue the innovation cycle. - There is significant focus on investing in green molecules (hydrogen, ammonia, methanol) and innovations in the circular economy. - The area of sustainability is rapidly developing in terms of investment, knowledge and technology, and it was fascinating to see where the energy industry is headed in 2024.

With the end of 2024 comes the last edition of our very own advent calendar. Let’s introduce work package (WP) 9, portfolio activities. ANEMEL is one of many projects funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) to address the EU’s Green Hydrogen challenge. 💚 WP9 ensures collaboration and information exchange between the different projects and initiatives, maximising their impact on society. 🟢 Main result: A key highlight this year was the “Hydrogen Horizons” event, co organised by ANEMEL and attended by over 100 experts from academia, start-ups, industry, and policymaking. 🔴 Biggest barrier faced: We’re a team within a team, as the Green Hydrogen Portfolio encompasses nine consortia with shared objectives and similar research topics. And as everyone knows, coordinating a team can sometimes be quite challenging. 🟠 What's yet to come: Together, our portfolio will design and develop more efficient electrodes for electrocatalytic reactions, based on earth-abundant metals like nickel.
