The Leadership Panel at Future Energy Asia Strategic Summit 2024, "Addressing Regulatory Bottlenecks to Boost Renewable Energy Development," highlighted International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)’s findings on how Southeast Asia can cut 75% of energy-related CO2 emissions by 2050 and save up to USD 160 billion in energy costs through renewables. Key discussions focused on the policies, frameworks, and support essential for tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. “The Philippines is so different from the rest of Asia because the whole sector is privatised and allows private developers to enter the market profitably. Moreover, it is the only country where there is tremendous change, and change is implemented,” said Olivier Duguet, Founder, Chairman and CEO, The Blue Circle Pte Ltd. Despite challenges such as uncertain policy frameworks and rising installation costs, the session underscored the need for regulatory clarity and international collaboration to advance renewable projects. “In the past, once an investor came in, he was left alone to navigate the rules and regulations of the different government agencies. Specifically, now, you can find assistance seamlessly in any government office or any need to understand rules and regulations,” said Bobby G. Fondevilla, Executive Director, Philippine Board of Investments (BOI). NINH THUAN: WORKSHOP ON GREEN ENERGY, GREEN HYDROGEN, AND NEUTRAL CARBON INDUSTRIAL PARK On April 27, the Workshop “Green energy, green hydrogen and neutral carbon industrial parks” hosted by the People’s Committee of Ninh Thuan welcomed over 200 participants, including representatives from state agencies, Ninh Thuan province, cities renowned for renewable energy potential, alongside representatives from businesses and energy experts. ♻️The leader of Ninh Thuan province expressed commitment to strengthening cooperation with domestic and international partners towards green growth. He emphasized green hydrogen is an innovative and sustainable technology solution, capable of leveraging Ninh Thuan’s abundant renewable energy potential. However, comprehensive development of the market requires significant time and investment. ✍️ To support this development e.g. a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for research and development of green hydrogen and green industrial park was signed among Siemens Energy and Trung Nam Group to realize green hydrogen projects and encourage the transformation of the province’s energy grid structure, contributing to Ninh Thuan’s sustainable development. 🔍Discussing the green hydrogen development in Viet Nam over the next 2-3 years, Mr. Markus Bissel, Project Director of the GIZ ESP's PtX Outreach Project underscored the immediate need for government, businesses, investors and relevant stakeholders to engage proactively in the green hydrogen industry. They should jointly prepare strategic and regulatory instruments, strengthen the technical capacities of educational and research institutions and dispose of decision-making bases for companies for participation in a green hydrogen economy. 🚩Over recent years, GIZ ESP has supported Viet Nam to lay the foundation for the green hydrogen industry throughout researching on legal frameworks, studying international experience in market development, raising awareness, and providing training for local officials and expert on basic and advanced knowledge of green hydrogen. In the coming periods, GIZ ESP will continue to implement more green hydrogen support in collaboration with the Vietnamese government, and to connect domestic and international businesses to jointly deploy pilot projects in Viet Nam.
