𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟮𝟵 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗶𝗷𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲: 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. As COP29 Azerbaijan wraps up in Baku, attendees are returning home, reflecting on the important discussions around climate change and the urgent need for action. Now, as delegates board their flights, it's a good moment for the aviation industry to reflect on its own environmental footprint—specifically regarding single-use plastics (SUPP) in airline cabins. In the run-up to the #UNEP meetings the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, offering a detailed look at the challenges and solutions for reducing SUPP in aviation. Airlines face increasing pressure to reduce waste and improve sustainability, limited alternatives available often hinder progress. The next UNEP meeting is scheduled to take place in #Busan on December 1, 2024 SUPP have long been used in aviation due to their strength, lightness, and ability to meet safety regulations. However, as the world pushes for cleaner solutions, the environmental impact of plastic waste cannot be ignored any longer. The need for more sustainable alternatives is clear. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 I insert an image of cutlery made of Solinatra, specially designed for airlines: fully natural, biodegradable materials that comply with all regulations, including food contact standards, and are suitable for composting or anaerobic digestion with biowaste. These materials can support a circular economy by replacing harmful plastic whilst 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 passengers expect. With the COP29 discussions fresh in their minds, airline decision-makers have the opportunity to implement real change. By embracing alternatives that reduce plastic use, airlines can play a crucial role in minimizing environmental impact, aligning with global sustainability efforts, and responding to consumer demand for greener travel options. While I was on leave last week, Ayushi Badola did an excellent roundup of the 20 most interesting in our weekly #Sustainability20 newsletter on Sustainability In The Air. https://lnkd.in/dfeeFGvE Here are the ones that stood out to me: 1. 🇮🇩 Indonesia will require 1% SAF for international flights from 2027, prioritszing used cooking oil and palm fatty acid distillate as feedstocks. 2. 💰 Climate tech firm AIR COMPANY secured $69 million in funding, led by aviation fuel supplier Avfuel, to convert CO2 into sustainable products. 3. 🇺🇸 Summit Next Gen plans the world's largest ethanol-to-jet SAF facility in Texas, aiming to produce 250 million gallons annually. 4. 🇨🇳 China launched a SAF pilot program with 12 commercial flights from 3 major airlines and 4 international airports, which will expand throughout 2025. 5. 🇬🇧 Belfast City Airport has introduced HVO fuel across its airside fleet, reducing annual carbon vehicle emissions by up to 90%. It appears that SAF is dominating the sustainable aviation landscape, pointing to an interesting route ahead for the industry. This trend aligns with the recent Delhi Declaration, where 29 Asia Pacific nations committed to accelerating efforts to reduce aviation's environmental impact and promote sustainable growth. A while back me, Alisa Lepik and Virge Prank-Vijard had the opportunity to represent Estonian Aviation Academy and attend ICAO seminar on Green Airports at Athens, Greece. Key points to we’d like to share with you: 1. Michelle Samson from Rotterdam The Hague Airport highlighted that “sustainability is not only a licence to grow, but a licence to exist”. It is for a reason that sustainability has become the hottest topic. 2. There are already single use plastic free airports- several in India. SFO also has a plastic free policy- everything is packaged in recyclable material. Additionally this promotes new ways of thinking and makes way for new out-of-the box ideas- for example Schipol airport recycles its own waste to make new roads (aka as paving material). 3. Emphasis is on co-operation- partnership is the new leadership! P.S Had the pleasure meeting the host- Deniz Kaymak. 🌍✈ Kenya Airways: Leading the Way in Sustainable Aviation Kenya Airways (KQ) has soared to the top at the 2024 SkyTeam Aviation Challenge, earning global recognition for its innovative sustainability efforts! 🏆 Awards Won: ✅ Best Scaled Catering Solution: Reducing 24 tonnes of single-use plastics annually by switching to traditional African bread baskets and aluminium food containers. ✅ Best Approach to Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): Partnering with a local producer to establish Kenya’s first SAF plant, creating jobs, boosting tree cover, and reducing carbon emissions. Beyond these wins, KQ demonstrated climate leadership with sustainable in-flight catering, waste management, and a “travel light” policy to minimize baggage weight. 🌍✈️ The aviation industry faces a significant challenge with the extensive use of single-use plastics. Recent studies highlight the environmental impact: 1. **Annual Cabin Waste**: According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), airlines generated over 6 million tons of cabin waste annually, much of it consisting of single-use plastics like cups, cutlery, and packaging. 2. **Plastic Use Per Flight**: Long-haul flights can produce around 1,000 kg (over 2,200 lbs) of waste, with a considerable portion being plastic. 3. **Industry Initiatives**: In response to these concerns, several airlines, including British Airways, Delta, and Qantas, have committed to reducing their single-use plastic usage. They are exploring alternatives such as biodegradable materials and reusable items. The push towards sustainability in aviation is crucial.
