In an important new article by Lama Khouri, she explores the mechanisms of necropolitics at work in the psychodynamics of international legal frameworks. Rather than a Winnicottian holding environment for establishing safety, international law is the environmental structures that sustain genocide. Khouri writes: “In exploring Winnicott’s concepts within a broader socio-political framework, we see a stark parallel between his psychological theory of a “holding environment” and the global mechanisms of international law and human rights conventions. Ideally, these international structures should function as a global holding environment, providing the necessary safety and stability for communities to develop and thrive. However, the reality, as seen through the lens of necropolitics, reveals a more sinister dynamic. Achille Mbembe’s analysis of necropolitics allows us to understand that these failures are not merely oversights but are components of a systematic approach employed by states to exert control over life and death (Mbembe, 2003). This deliberate undermining of the global holding environment, particularly evident in the handling of the Gaza genocide, exemplifies how powerful nations manipulate these structures to sustain geopolitical dominance, effectively deciding the survivability of marginalized populations. By linking Winnicott’s theory with necropolitical practices, we uncover how the international community’s negligence mirrors the catastrophic failures in the maternal-infant relationship, perpetuating cycles of trauma and resistance among Palestinians.” https://lnkd.in/gmpxTGeY

Peaceful Conflict Resolution A wonderful session conducted with Dr. Phill Gittins , The Education Director at the World BEYOND War The important highlights of the conversation are as under Dr. Phill feels Peace work ,basically would invoke a need to zoom in on the needs of people and yet have the ability to zoom out to understand the large picture of war and the global challenges. Conflict is a part of everyday life and WAR is not a conflict but the outcome or the path that is taken to resolve conflict . The path that could be taken to resolve could be constructive as in peaceful resolution or destructive through war , also pertinent is the economic cost of the destructive path . The real challenge today is to popularise the idea of peace ! In any economy where war is prevalent the development takes a backseat and every one gets affected , not just those who are in the state of war . More money spent on war means less money spent on education and development. There is real need to educate the people and make effort to replace the war system with the peace system ! That is what he endeavours to do with World BEYOND War . The link to the session & channel https://lnkd.in/gvgEqxs8 https://lnkd.in/gqSaTFiF #peace #mediation #conflict

In its Advisory Opinion published on Friday, July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice #ICJ concludes that Israel’s ongoing presence in the “Occupied Palestinian Territory”, including East Jerusalem, violates the Palestinian right to self-determination and is illegal. The Court’s findings and conclusions were supported by 11 of the fifteen judges. Three of the judges differed on certain aspects. One judge – Vice-President Sebutinde – rejected the Opinion and issued a Dissenting Opinion. Andrew Tucker, Director of The Hague Initiative for International Cooperation (thinc.). said “Judge Sebutinde’s Dissent shows how the Opinion completely lacks historical context. The Court assumes that the Jewish people have no connection with these so-called “occupied” territories. It does not even inquire into the history of this territory or conflict. According to the court, “occupation consists of the exercise by a state of effective control over foreign territory”. Yet the Court, by its own admission, makes no inquiry into the question whether Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria are “foreign territory”. In fact, the Court provides no factual evidence or legal reasoning to support the conclusion that these territories are “Palestinian”. At what point in time did they become Palestinian? The Court provides no answer. #internationallaw #thinc #hague #israel #palestinians #court #icj #unitednations Image credit: Peace Palace, UN.org

Make Space for Local Peacebuilders to Lead 🕊️✌️The power to influence and drive change within community members, lies with the local actors of change. It is imperative to create more inclusive and intentional ways. for local peacebuilders to lead, shape, and influence the peace process in their regions and communities. Why? 🕊️✌️Local peacebuilders have a deep understanding of the social and political context, culture, and dynamics of their communities. 🕊️✌️Local peacebuilders have greater trust and legitimacy within their communities. How? 🕊️✌️Find, support and advocate for local communities, peacebuilders and civil society actors. Ensure they can participate, engage in and lead the agenda for the peace negotiations, mediation efforts, policies and peacebuilding programmes that impact them. Do this through policy and governance reforms in current international peacebuilding infrastructures. 🕊️✌️Establish inclusive dialogue platforms as a core priority in conflict prevention programmes. These platforms must bring together local peacebuilders, community leaders, government officials, religious leaders, and international stakeholders to jointly address conflict-related issues and shape peacebuilding strategies. 🕊️✌️Invest in and join peace processes where the agenda is clearly led and delivered by local peacebuilders and civil society. Stop creating alternative structures. #PeaceStartsHere
