This couldn't be more true. This is the difference between perception and perspective. Our narrow focus and reliance on our intellectual prowess has led us all to the point where modern medicine and mental health interventions are reluctant, and at times, actively refuse to consider environmental and sociocultural elements as a potential cause of mental or physical distress. We are so plugged into our perception of things that we don't see, or choose to ignore, the lived experiences of others. #dropthedisorder #PerceptionVsPerspective #IntellectualBlindspots #BiomedicalBias #HolisticHealth #SocioculturalContext #LivedExperiences #HealthcareInequity #MentalHealthAwareness #EnvironmentalInfluence #InclusiveMedicine

What does it mean to decolonize therapy? Decolonizing therapy means challenging and transforming traditional models of mental health care rooted in Eurocentric, colonial ideologies. It's about acknowledging that mental health is deeply tied to social, historical, and political contexts, and recognizing that many conventional therapy practices have ignored or minimized the impact of colonialism, systemic oppression, and cultural erasure on mental well-being. By decolonizing therapy, we center the voices and experiences of marginalized communities, incorporate culturally responsive healing practices, and recognize that the systems around us—not just individuals—are often the sources of our trauma. This approach shifts the focus from "fixing" individuals to addressing the root causes of distress through communal and political action. What steps can you take to begin shifting your practice from medical to decolonial models? #DecolonizeTherapy #SocialJusticeInMentalHealth #RadicalHealing #CulturallyResponsiveCare #TherapistsForJustice

Mental Health Awareness Month Spotlight 🌟 Throughout generations, due to systemic racism, repeated racial trauma and harms done to Black, Brown, and other communities of color in the United States have had lasting effects. As a result, these communities often have poorer physical, mental, and economic conditions compared to the average white American community. For Mental Health Awareness Month, BHPN would like to uplift our REPAIR framework which highlights the importance of implementing community-led racial healing models, which are essential to the work of racial healing. Explore the framework to learn about the role institutions can play in reconciling harms and pursuing deeper solidarity toward racial healing. https://lnkd.in/gwxqVRfP #RacialHealing #Solidarity #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealing #RacialHealingModels #RacialTrauma

“We envisage a society in which mental health problems are an acceptable and in some ways valued part of the human experience.” Mike Slade, Lindsay Oades, & Aaron Jarden, Wellbeing, Recovery and Mental Health Systemic inequities such as racism, classism, and sexism are breeding grounds for harm, violence, and oppression that jeopardize generational wellness, health, and safety. At SJF, we recognize the significance of preventative strategies that fight historic and systemic inequities causing intergenerational poverty and collective trauma. We understand that trauma-informed care is people-centered, offering holistic interventions to mitigate the risks and stressors of an individual’s trauma experience. Through our Community Healing and Resilience focus, we seek community growth and advancement and we work towards a more compassionate world where all of our life experiences are valued. #WorldMentalHealthDay
