This month, we are committed to spotlight untold success stories of black people in the UK who have, and continue to contribute to our country’s cultural, social, economic, and political landscape. Black artists who are often overlooked…   Are you aware of Black artists from the 20th and 21st centuries who are known to art institutions, but are who are not as widely known or celebrated as some of their historical or contemporary peers and are often excluded from mainstream conversations? "For example, Alma Thomas, Jack Whitten, Sam Gilliam, and Frank Bowling are well-deserved citations of the early Black abstractionists, but lesser known to that history, broadly speaking, are Lilian Thomas Burwell, Evangeline “EJ” Montgomery, and Deborah Dancey. While contemporary artists like Kerry James Marshall, Betye Saar, and Faith Ringgold are the founding leaders of contemporary figurative painting and printmaking, the contributions of artists like Malcolm Bailey, Charles Alston, and Camille Billops may not be as widely known or discussed." Listen to their stories: Often our voices go unheard, ignored, and even taken for granted. Black History Month provides a platform to educate people about the often-overlooked achievements, struggles, and experiences of Black people throughout history. It helps fill gaps in historical knowledge and promotes a more inclusive understanding of the past. The arts have often been a powerful means of conveying social and political messages. African American artists have used their work to address issues of race, identity, discrimination, and social justice. This theme underscores the role of the arts in advocating for change and raising awareness of important societal issues. This Black History Month, check out the series BLACK VOICES ON RACE. 🗣️ The United States has been reckoning with race and racism since its inception. Black creatives of all types—novelists, poets, musicians, singers, actors, directors, and more—have used their chosen media to illuminate this struggle and articulate the experience of being Black in America. This fascinating series, written by Black authors, tells the stories of eight Black creatives whose artistic and cultural contributions have expanded the collective conversation on race. Each book summarizes the person’s life and career to date, drawing attention to their accomplishments and how they have spoken out as a voice on race. Each book also includes a table of contents, a “Consider This” special feature, a biographical timeline, informative sidebars, quiz questions, a glossary, additional resources, and an index. DotHouse proudly celebrates Black History Month (BHM)! BHM is every February and celebrates the achievements and history of African Americans. BHM was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. The 2024 theme centralizes on "African Americans and the Arts" spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more. Social justice has historically developed visual and literary arts to capture the spirit and platforms of resistance, and to disseminate those messages to audiences outside of mainstream methods. African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment.
