Marilyn Monroe, beloved by audiences around the world, died feeling lost and unloved. Her own inner critic destroyed her career, her relationships and ultimately, her will to live. Her sad example reveals an important truth: self-doubt is an experience created by a relentless inner critic who will never be satisfied. If you see reflections of your experience in Marilyn's sad story, take these steps immediately to silence this inner saboteur: 1. What are you saying to yourself? Pay attention to your thoughts by checking in with yourself several times each day. This is especially important to do when your mood is in a downward spiral. 2. Confront the inner critic. Write down these thoughts to see the power they are holding over your life. 3. Combat these thoughts with power statements that reflect your strengths, accomplishments, and victories. If your thought is "This will never work." Change it to "What if this works?" Or, “I’ll try this and if it doesn’t work I’ll simply try something else. Failure is an important step on the road to ultimate success.” 🔑 🚅 My life has been supercharged since I started combating the inner doubter with possibility thoughts. Have you ever had that "I'm not qualified for this" feeling? I know this is for someone cos for a long time I've been battling with posting it. I honestly wish there was a way to shorten it. CONQUERING IMPOSTER SYNDROME: A JOURNEY TO SELF-ACCEPTANCE. Imposter syndrome, that nagging feeling of inadequacy despite evident accomplishments, can be a formidable obstacle in both personal and professional realms. It whispers doubts about our abilities, undermines achievements, and breeds a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud. Yet, overcoming imposter syndrome is not an insurmountable task; it's a journey toward self-acceptance and empowerment. Recognising imposter syndrome is the first step to conquering it. Awareness allows us to differentiate between genuine self-doubt and irrational fears. Understanding that imposter syndrome is a common phenomenon experienced by many successful individuals can be reassuring. It's not a sign of incompetence but rather a consequence of setting high standards for oneself. Challenging negative thoughts is essential. Instead of dwelling on perceived shortcomings, focus on achievements and skills. Keeping a record of compliments, accomplishments, and positive feedback can serve as a tangible reminder of one's capabilities during moments of self-doubt. Seeking support from mentors, friends, or therapists can provide valuable perspective and encouragement. Sharing experiences with others who have battled imposter syndrome can foster a sense of solidarity and diminish feelings of isolation. Embracing failure as a natural part of growth is crucial. Understanding that setbacks are opportunities for learning and improvement can alleviate the fear of being exposed as a fraud. Celebrate successes, no matter how small, and acknowledge the effort invested in achieving them. Cultivating self-compassion is perhaps the most powerful tool in overcoming imposter syndrome. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a friend facing similar struggles. Remember that perfection is an unrealistic standard, and self-worth is not contingent upon flawless performance. Finally, accept that overcoming imposter syndrome is an ongoing process. It may resurface during times of stress or transition, but armed with self-awareness and coping strategies, its grip can be loosened. Most importantly, you're not alone in this journey, and your worth is not defined by fleeting feelings of inadequacy. As always, I am rooting for you.

IMPOSTER SYNDROME. Imposter syndrome refers to the persistent feeling of inadequacy or the fear of being exposed as a fraud, despite evidence of one’s accomplishments and qualifications. It’s a common experience, especially among high achievers, where individuals doubt their abilities and believe they don’t deserve their success. I have been experiencing IMPOSTER SYNDROME for quite a while now, always doubting my abilities, qualifications and knowledge. I decided to break out from this box and did some research on managing “imposter syndrome”. If you’re experiencing imposter syndrome just like me, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone, and many successful people have felt the same way. Recognizing and acknowledging these feelings is the first step towards overcoming them. Here are a few strategies to cope with imposter syndrome: 1. Acknowledge your achievements: Take time to reflect on your accomplishments and recognize your skills and abilities. Keep a record of your successes and remind yourself of them when self-doubt creeps in. 2. Normalize failure: Understand that making mistakes and facing setbacks is a natural part of learning and growth. Instead of dwelling on failures, focus on the lessons you’ve learned and how they’ve contributed to your development. 3. Talk about it: Share your feelings with trusted colleagues, mentors, or friends. You’ll likely find that many others can relate to what you’re going through, and their support can be invaluable in boosting your confidence. 4. Challenge negative thoughts: Whenever you catch yourself thinking negatively about your abilities or accomplishments, challenge those thoughts with evidence to the contrary. Remind yourself of your strengths and past successes. 5. Set realistic expectations: Avoid setting impossibly high standards for yourself. Recognize that perfection is unattainable, and strive for progress rather than perfection. 6. Seek professional help: If imposter syndrome is significantly impacting your well-being or performance, consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor who can help you develop coping strategies and build self-confidence. 7. Words of affirmation: speak positive words to yourself everyday and renew your mind with positivity. You are smart, intelligent, beautiful and yes you are fit for that position/role, you deserve everything that is coming your way!!!

The Thief Called Imposter Syndrome A few months ago, I attended a program where a young lady asked to interview me. Her first question caught me off guard "How do you deal with imposter syndrome?" For a moment, I was stunned. "How did she know? Was it that obvious?" Prior to arriving at the event, I had been wrestling with imposter syndrome, asking myself if I deserved to be there, and how long before I'm 'found out' and 'exorcised?' (Yes, I do have a humorous side). Imposter syndrome, the persistent self-doubt despite evident success can happen to the best of us. Even Steven Bartlett, a renowned British entrepreneur and podcaster shared his struggles with it. Interestingly, he views it through a positive lens. In his words, "If you're not feeling like an imposter, then you're probably in your comfort zone, and that's not where the good things happen." I couldn’t agree more. Life often challenges us, and these moments of growth sometimes trigger imposter syndrome. Being in unfamiliar environments or surrounded by highly accomplished individuals can make us question our worth. The truth is, there are ways to fight back against this thief that tries to steal our confidence. Here are a few strategies from successful people that I’ve found helpful in battling imposter syndrome: 1. Use Evidence of Your Track Record: Counter feelings of doubt with facts. Look at your past achievements and successes. Let your track record remind you of your worth. 2. Embrace Your Growth Zone: Like Steven Bartlett, recognize that feeling like an imposter means you are stepping outside your comfort zone. They say growth happens in discomfort. So, if you feel uneasy, it’s likely that you are growing into something greater...cheers! 3. Shift your mindset from "I don't belong here" to "I am learning and evolving." Nobody expects you to have all the answers, but they expect you to show up and give your best. 4. Talk About It: Share your feelings with trusted mentors or colleagues. The more open you are about imposter syndrome, the less power it has over you. 5. Everyone Starts Somewhere: Even the most successful people had moments of doubt. They, too, had to grow into their roles. It’s okay not to know everything, nobody does. What matters is your commitment to learning and contributing. 6. Practice Self-Compassion: Imposter syndrome thrives on harsh self-criticism, so be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that it's okay to feel vulnerable and you are not alone. Imposter syndrome might be a persistent visitor, but it doesn’t have to control the narrative. Recognize it for what it is, a thief, and not allow it to steal your confidence or slow down your journey. Trust in the evidence of your hard work and dedication. You deserve your seat at the table, and the more you own that truth, the less power imposter syndrome will have over you. Thank you for attending my "Ted Talk." Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead! #storytellingwitheke Image Credit: Planet Flem
