The emphasis on social media in today’s music environment allows artists to break through at unprecedented rates. But just because they went viral, these artists might not be ready to play stadiums or have fans that are coming to see their shows. Moderator Stephen Glicken, CEO & Co-Founder, Project Admission, and panelists Amy Davidson, Executive Vice President, mtheory LLC; David O'Connor, Vice President, Artist & Business Development, Live Nation Entertainment & Founder, OnesToWatch; Amy Siripunyo, Senior Brand & Growth Manager, US, Groover; and Chuck Steedman, President & CEO, LiveCo (official); spoke to the importance of artists having an honest and realistic team, especially economically. Treating every tour like it’s the last is an alluring trap, so it’s important to coach artists on starting small and building a fan community. This time is used to learn how to navigate the ups and downs of the live industry, ensuring the artist can have a long and fulfilling live career. Even in the era of social media, panelists came to a consensus that the most effective ways to get people to shows still includes mailing lists and SMS messaging. This strategy also allows artists to own the data of their fans and learn how to target them more specifically. Dear music business executives, I know how much y’all want an artist with high social media and DSPs numbers. Always remember good music deserves fair hearing. Not every emerging independent artist has the financial capability to market their recordings. Some will only try to grow their numbers organically relying on algorithms and very few people for repost. Give emerging artists touring chances. Let them tour six states of their prospective target audience before signing. This will not only boost the scanty numbers but will also show a glaring evidence of which artist and song the audience has connected to, giving A&Rs live analytics of these talents. The Rose-Tinted Glasses of the "Old" Music Industry 🎤 There’s a growing trend among artists today to romanticize the music industry of the past—before digital platforms and content creation became dominant. The perception is that there was once a "fair" system where artists were nurtured, and success came easily if you had talent. 🎶 Yes, there was a time when record labels invested more heavily in artist development, giving new talent the kind of initial support that we rarely see today. But let’s not forget that the industry was far from fair even then. 🤔 Record labels have always taken advantage of artists. From unfavorable contracts to ownership of masters, the music industry has been built on extracting as much value as possible from musicians. The artists who succeeded had to fight tooth and nail, often going independent or finding creative ways to reclaim their careers. 🛠️ The key takeaway for artists today is that there’s no “perfect” past to long for.
