Did you know that South Africa has higher recycling rates than Europe? What about the fact that North America has between 9,000 and 10,000 different recycling programmes? These topics and much more were discussed during the Sustainable Packaging Summit last year. Global leaders from Nestlé, PepsiCo and Stora Enso shared their experiences with the participants in navigating the recently Plastic Tax, EU Green Deal and the challenges across the different countries they are present. Do you want to be part of the conversation and connect with the leaders making a difference in the packaging industry? 70% of the UK population considers plastics a critical issue. Six years ago, WRAP launched The UK Plastics Pact, the first in a global network of Plastic Pacts. This initiative unites businesses across the plastics value chain with governments and NGOs to combat plastic waste. Representing 75% of all consumer plastic packaging in the UK, the UK Plastics Pact has been a driving force for collaboration and innovation in the industry. Since 2018 problematic plastic items have been reduced by 99% and the levels of recycled content has tripled. Every year, the Plastics Pact brings together key plastics industry experts and innovators for collaborative networking and knowledge exchange at our UK Plastics Pact Annual Summits - essential for driving collective efforts towards our targets. The 2024 summit will be held in July. Learn more about the impactful work of the UK Plastics Pact and how to join https://lnkd.in/egP5d-BJ

We recently joined forces with Institute of International and European Affairs on a Real Talk roundtable to foster honest discussions among policymakers, NGOs and industry leaders in Ireland on advancing the circular economy for plastic packaging. A new white paper following the roundtable recommends a greater focus on the opportunities unlocked by the circular economy, a sectoral approach from the Government to policy on the circular economy and strengthening recycling and reprocessing capacity and infrastructure on the island of Ireland. Through these recommendations, together we can reach the EU Single Use Plastic Directive targets of collecting 77% of plastic bottles for recycling by 2025 – increasing to 90% by the end of the decade. Waste-to-energy (WtE) is an ingenious process that converts waste into usable energy. We can reduce landfill waste let's turn trash into treasure! What should we do with more and more garbage? Conversion of plastic and tire waste into energy carriers, such as heating oil, diesel, grill coke, synthesis gas, etc. Waste-to-Energy plant is a great alternative to reduce the area for waste treatment and disposal, in addition to generating energy for all small cities in the region. A good alternative is to create an inter-municipal cooperative between small cities to share costs. It is a social advantage if small villages we are supplied with locally produced energy, thus creating local jobs for the local energy using population from waste collected locally, where the government should finance projects, if they do not want their country to be covered in waste. Our innovation in environmental protection is the use of microwave technology. The main advantage of vapor plasma reactors is that there is no nitrogen in the plasma reactor in the microwave steam plasma, no nitrogen from the air (only hydrogen and oxygen are produced from water vapor) In emissions no nitrogen oxide, which is 40x more toxic than carbon monoxid, no sulfur dioxide (filtration with ceramic filters, with adsorbents), minimal carbon dioxide and odorless emissions. Wind turbine blades can be reused in a non-thermal microwave plasma field where the electron temperature is much higher than the generated gas temperature, including the vibrational and rotational temperature of the molecules. In the plasma space, all complex compounds such as resins, aromatic molecules and tars are effectively degraded and separated from the inorganic glass fiber reinforcement. In the Syschemiq project, 21 organisations from all over Europe have been working for the past year and a half or so towards creating a circular urban-industrial plastics district, by improving plastic recycling in the trilateral region of Belgium, the Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia. Together with the NGO community and Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE), we call on #EU policymakers to provide a fair and preferential access right to food-grade recyclates in the proposal for an EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR). ✅ Priority access WILL: ◾️ support industry in meeting its recycled content targets; ◾️ enable the closed-loop recycling of #packaging, whenever it makes sense and is technically feasible. ❌ Priority access WON’T: ◾️ restrict the EU market for plastic recyclates. With a system of priority access in place, recyclers will still be able to sell food-grade recycled materials at the relevant market price. This is already the case in Slovakia, where priority access has been successfully implemented, and will soon be introduced in Austria. ◾️ stifle innovation or reduce incentives for recyclers to expand their recycling capacities. On the contrary, it should encourage recyclers to collaborate with partner sectors to invest in the collection and recycling of their own materials. 🔎 Read our joint letter 👇 https://t.co/8TctLMda5 #ClosingTheLoop #CircularEconomy #EUGreenDeal

We are pleased to share another published research paper from The DITCh Plastic Network titled "The Environment for a Digitally Enabled Circular Plastics Economy in Africa: Lessons from Cross-Sectional Stakeholder Engagements." This paper emphasises that while progress is being made toward a circular plastic economy, regime changes are essential for breaking away from the traditional linear economy model. Well done to the authors Professor Muyiwa Oyinlola, Seun Kolade, Patrick Schröder, Victor Odumuyiwa, Barry Rawn, Dr. Kutoma Wakunuma, Soroosh Sharifi, Selma Lendelvo, Ifeoluwa Akanmu, Timothy Whitehead, Radhia Mtonga, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani and Soroush Abolfathi . Hear from Daniel Mitchell, President of ACOPLÁSTICOS - Asociación Colombiana de Industrias Plásticas, as he presents on: "Overview of Plastics Regulation Including Implementation of SUP Directive & Plastics Tax in Colombia”. at the 9th SCAPET Series - Circular Plastics Packaging South & Central America (11-12 June 2024, Medellin). In 2024, South and Central America undergo significant shifts in circular plastics packaging due to environmental concerns, regulations, and consumer preferences. Governments initiate actions like the $42 million project in Colombia, Jamaica, and Panama to promote circularity. Challenges such as insufficient recycling infrastructure persist despite growing demand for eco-friendly packaging. Companies like Nestlé partner on projects like Recicleiros Cidades in Brazil to enhance recycling education and infrastructure, fostering industry innovation. 🌍 Our delegation is already in Busan ready to advocate for a health-centered Global Plastics Treaty in #INC5. The health care sector is a major plastic consumer and generates a significant amount of plastic waste. But the sector can also lead in the transformation to break our reliance on plastic health care products. Many facilities worldwide are already taking action and promoting sustainable procurement and reducing single-use plastics, as shown by our Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network. 🌱 We need the rest of the world, especially the plastic-producing industries to do the same. Take action now by sending an email to the INC-5 delegation at https://lnkd.in/gdNEQZA9. Amplify our calls for a treaty that protects the planet AND our people by signing the open letter at https://lnkd.in/g2FGTigZ.

Noelle Anne Cubacub: Unless people change how we use and dispose of plastic, we will soon fully realize that most of the planet’s resources are limited and will be used up in due time - while people might die, plastic will outlast us. --- This article is part of a series published under the Coca-Cola Junior Fellowship on Environment, Social and Governance Policy, an initiative of FACTS Asia and Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines Inc. that recognizes the importance of adopting sustainable development practices to cope with different global challenges like climate change and the need to foster an understanding of sustainable development issues. https://lnkd.in/g8dkQ_u4
