Belgium have the right model for EPR in my view. One PRO for household waste and one PRO for industrial and commercial waste - in the packaging sector 👏🏻

Revolutionary waste conversion into environmentally friendly fuels without wasting water. Remarkable and sustainable. There are no NOx emissions and no waste water is produced. With an investment of a few tens of thousands of dollars, we created the entire vertical of the possibility of small-scale waste processing for poorer countries. There are no NOx emissions during gasification in water vapor microwave plasma. NOx has a harmful effect on health and the environment, NO2, for example, is 40 times more toxic than CO. Water vapor plasma consists exclusively of hydrogen and oxygen; both components are active reagents that participate in oxidation-reduction reactions. There is no ballast, such as air plasma nitrogen, where its percentage is 78%. When reacting with chlorine-containing substances, water vapor plasma does not produce dioxin, which is one of the most toxic substances. The flue gases produced during the gasification of the steam plasma do not contain nitrogen oxides. The main advantage of steam plasma reactors is that there is no nitrogen in the steam plasma, the plasma reactor, the gasifier and the plasma afterburner chamber, so there is no nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The hydrogen introduced into the reaction space with the steam plasma slows down the reactions of gaseous sulphur, phosphorus and free chlorine formation, i.e. gases that are difficult to remove in the gas purification unit. I am looking for co-partners/co-investors to build micro power plants that convert waste from landfills, ocean and riverside settlements into fuel and electricity. Our goal is to produce fuel and electricity locally from the waste collected from landfills on the river and the ocean coast, creating local jobs for the population and villages living on the coast. We have optimized our technology for local energy production, local job creation, and cheap investment in a clean environment and our clean waters (sea, ocean, river banks). Environmental protection continues to be our primary concern, as in the European Union they comply with very strict environmental protection standards compared to the poorer countries of the world, where they can still pollute our vital air. technology: www.gumienergia.hu

In an ambitious leap towards being more resource positive, we have teamed up with Plastic Bank, unveiling a transformative project set to reshape Egypt's recycling landscape while increasing security for waste collectors. This initiative is about much more than just recycling; it's about reimagining livelihoods for those at the frontline of waste collection. Through the innovative use of Plastic Bank's blockchain technology, ethical working conditions will be ensured, and the collected waste will be traceable, turning it into revenue for the waste collectors. #circulareconomy #SIG #socialresponsibility

We are wrapping up our series on our 2024 goals by shining a light on the essential work of our Legal framework Workstream. Their focus? Monitoring and advocating for the development of regulations and guidelines that support the establishment of a sustainable business model for recycling in Europe. Concretely, that means that our Workstream is monitoring regulations and directives concerning liner and matrix waste, not only at the European level but also at the national level. These are essentially the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the Waste Framework Directive, the Waste Shipment Regulation, and the Plastic Packaging Tax in the UK, Italy, and Spain, among others. This work is essential to keep our Regulatory reference document up-to-date for all CELAB Europe members. A summary of this document is on our website - check the link in the comments! Many thanks to Ophelie Gourdou, Jules Lejeune, Marcus Gablowski, Dr. Aleš Krmela, Alex Knott, Emilie Bartolini, Chris Ogle, Pablo Englebienne, Sonja Haug, Senta Becker, Ina Hilker Fabio Peyer, Hugh Yuhyeon Han for their work in this workstream. #Sustainability #Regulations #Recycling #EuropeanDirectives #wastemanagement

The #PPWR trilogue parties - meeting next time on 4th March - need to adress massive imports of plastics labelled as recycled - if a strong EU recycling industry and a circular economy for plastics remain the goal.
Council experts are hosting an informal videoconference tomorrow, ahead of the next trilogue on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) scheduled for 4 March. EuRIC's message is clear: 🆘 We call for urgent EU action to protect Europe's plastics recycling industry and address the massive imports of plastics labelled as recycled. 🆘 European plastics’ recyclers should not be left behind. COPCO was invited to speak at the World Economic Forum and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) pre-event #INC5 on plastic pollution and trade. As a representative for the compostable plastics industry in South Africa, COPCO reflected on the regional dynamics for substitution materials and how the ILBI can promote plastic alternatives that are responsible by supporting trade in environmentally beneficial substitutes. COPCO proposes identifying materials and applications, including agriculture, medical applications, and fishing gear replacements. COPCO also proposes the identification of undesired plastics. We need transparency and new standards without making it difficult for new environmentally beneficial innovations to enter the market space. Henrique Pacini David Vivas Eugui

The Global Plastics Outlook (2022) notes that only 9% of all plastic waste is recycled globally, whilst the rest ends up in landfill (49%), being formally incinerated (19%) or mismanaged / uncollected (22%). This outlook is markedly different in Africa in that 64% of all plastic waste is mismanaged / uncollected. In these few sentences lie many complex challenges, but also opportunities to curb the tide on plastic waste in creating recycling businesses, new product design solutions and livelihood opportunities. I was honoured to represent The SMEP Programme and our 10 plastic projects at the WTO's Public Forum this week in Geneva. I shared the stage with these esteemed panelists (Henrique Pacini , Heloisa Pereira Tetyana Payosova and Aleksander Sobolenko) - which made for a rich discussion around the role of trade in the circular plastics economy. Some takeaways for me: ✅ Certification and standards are lagging behind innovation of plastic alternatives. This hinders commercialisation and trading of these new innovative plastic substitutes. For example, this is experienced by a SMEP Programme, Catchgreen (who has developed a world first biodegradable fishing gear with @GAIABiomaterials) and also by the company Releaf Paper who is producing packaging and paper from fallen leaves (represented by Aleksander on the panel here). ✅Contextual realities in developing countries add additional complexities for smaller recycling operations when trying to access export markets. These include logistical and transport challenges in retrieving plastic waste (used as feedstock) from the environment and transporting recycled semi-finished or finished goods to ports, costly import taxes on equipment needed for recycling, etc. ✅These are important insights for higher-level discussions such as here at the WTO and during the negotiations of the INC Plastic treaty in ensuring that resources and finance mechanisms support an inclusive transition to a circular plastics economy. Thank you Henrique Pacini and @UNTAD for the invite. So honoured to meet the panelists and most of all to represent the passionate SMEP grantees who create magic despite the odds! What a week! Over 4400 participants gathered at the WTO's Public Forum. As part of the event, and with support from UK-FCDO, the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Brazil's MDIC jointly organized a session discussing how a transition to a new plastics economy can be made possible. We heard from Heloisa Pereira, Brazil's undersecretary for foreign trade, on the potential for multiple trade-restrictive measures being contemplated in the #INC negotiating text; From Alexander Sobolenko on how his company Releaf Paper is tackling the risks of regrettable material substitution by focusing on waste-based cellulosic sources (fallen leaves) for paper & packaging applications; From Elzette Henshilwood on how African and South Asian entrepreneurs under the The SMEP Programme ultimately rely on foreign market access to upscale their operations; and from Tetyana Payosova, who in addition to being a prolific moderator, also presented initial insights on a study mapping the critical role of trade-in-services in plastic pollution mitigation. https://lnkd.in/e8Vyh49S
